Both Shi Mian Mai Fu and Ba Wang Xie Jia are to paint the intensity of the Battle of Gaixia. Shi Mian Mai Fu is about General Han Xin (who served Liu Bang) tricked "Hegemon-King of Western Chu" Xiang Yu and had him and his troops ambushed. Ba Wang Xie Jia is about Xiang Yu removing armour after losing the battle. He committed suicide soon after. In short, Shi Mian Mai Fu is for celebrating the victory of Liu Bang while Ba Wang Cie Jia is to describe the tragic ending of Xiang Yu.
十面埋伏和霸王卸甲都是表现垓下之战的紧张气氛。十面埋伏讲述的是韩信（效忠于刘邦）用计于西楚霸王，使之军队中计。霸王卸甲讲述的是项羽战场失利后脱掉盔甲的片段，之后他便勇敢的自杀了。简而言之，十面埋伏是庆祝刘邦的胜利而霸王卸甲是为了描述项羽的英雄末路。

I've watched other pipa players, even masters, and the one thing that misses out is the "love" between them and the instrument. I love the way she holds it so close to her face and even closes her eyes at some points. Most other players usually have an impersonality to the way they hold it. Its more of a lover than an instrument to her ... at last thats how it looks from here :)

Speaktheworld, you're correct in one aspect, following the path and the spirit of Western science is progress, as it is the most objective and logical approach, but there is a general tendency in China including Taiwan that anything American or Western is good and they copy it wholesale. That's a mistake. Every culture has its strength and shortcomings. What a culture should do to make progress is to retain its good tradition and absorb and incorporate the good aspects of foreign culture.

Perfect technique and a rare talent ! One thing I have noticed is that the movements and facial expressions are too exaggerated, a deviation from the traditional elegant movements that a traditional Chinese instrument performer will display. I think this is a trend in musical instrument performers' circles in China, trying to emulate the Western style such as that of Yo Yo Ma in the name of progress. To me, the Chinese style has its own merits and there is no need to abandon it.

As a Chinese, I have to say that we have no intention of abandoning any part of our traditional music. The westernization of science, NOT culture, is progress. Yo Yo Ma is Chinese American, and his choice to play the cello has nothing to do with his heritage or trying to "progress" Chinese society since he was born and raised in American society.

Simply amazing. I close my eyes and I imagine "The Ambush" taking place as Liu Fang strums her Pipa. Just amazing, I can't believe that there are 15 people who "disliked" the video.. that's crazy! If Liu Fang were ever to play in where I live, near Boston, I would certainly go to see her play. I have seen her play the Guzheng too and she is very adept at that instrument as well.

Lol, this being a traditional instrument, changing its design probably isn't going to happen. (It's called Pipa: 琵琶) Think it was the instrument of choice for court musicians.
