A MASSIVE £4 BILLION of essential public services may be axed to help pay for Britain’s astronomical £1.3 TRILLION public sector pensions bill, chancellor Philip Hammond has threatened.

Philip Hammond

Frontline services including schools, hospitals, the police and armed forces – are all targets for savings to offset the spiralling public sector pension costs.
Mr Hammond warned massive cuts to the public service sector may be necessary,

Because of an incredibly complex piece of fiscal manouvreing public sector employers such as hospitals may be forced to increase pension contributions for staff – bizarrely meaning there will be less money to actually provide services.

In a Commons document, Treasury Minister Liz Truss said: “The early indications are that the amount employers pay towards the schemes will need to increase.
“Further discussions will be taken forward as part of the Spending Review.”

Critics expressed fears the move would hit the Government's £20 billion NHS funding package, a health reform scheme announced by Prime Minister Theresa May in June.

Former Lib Dem pensions minister Steve Webb said: “Treasury sleight of hand means that frontline public services like hospitals and schools are going to face a squeeze.
“If the Government wants the NHS to have an extra £20billion a year, the public will expect this money to be spent on improved health care, and not have a chunk handed back to the Treasury to pay for higher pension bills.
