WhenHollywood stars including Matt Damon, Joaquin Phoenix and Minnie Driver filmedan emotional appeal to stop China’s brutal dog meat trade, horrified animal lovers from Britain andaround the world rallied to the cause.

Volunteersfrom the UK and the US flew out to help charismatic animal crusader Marc Ching – who orchestrated thecelebrity appeal – stage a daring bid to shut downslaughterhouses and rescue 1,000 dogs from the dinner table.

Theanimal lovers promised to find homes for the dogs in the West.

Buta Mail on Sunday investigation has found that – unknown to his Hollywood backers anddonors – Ching’s high-profileoperation deteriorated into farce, and ended with hundreds of dogs sufferingslow and excruciatingly painful deaths within days of being rescued.

Wefound that:

·        Many of the dogs died after being locked in cages anddenied basic treatment and injections that might have saved them;

好多狗被救出来后都被锁在笼子里,也不进行基本治疗、也不打针,最后都死在里面;

·        Volunteers were left behind desperately trying to savethe dogs’lives, while Ching flew back to the US after the rescue suffering fromdepression;

志愿者们曾被留下全力拯救狗狗的生命,可ching飞回国内后,迟迟没有表现出救援的动作;

·        Up to two-thirds of the dogs are now believed to be dead,with the British head of an animal charity involved in dealing with the pitifulaftermath saying: ‘Thosepoor dogs just went from one hell to another’;

现在能有三分之二的狗都已经死了,英国动物慈善机构负责人在面对这一悲惨结局表示:“这些可怜的狗只是从一个地狱掉进了另一个地狱”;

·        Questions have been raised over shock videos used in thecelebrity fundraising appeal of dogs being tortured, burned and boiled alive;

·        Only a few dozen of the 1,000 dogs made it to new homesoverseas, and two international charities, including British-run SoiDog, are paying for the majority of the dogs still alive tobe taken out of China.

Ching, who runs an LA pet nutritionbusiness and restaurant for pets – and whose customers include Matt Damon– began travelling to Asia to rescue dogs fromslaughterhouses in September last year.

1.     Celebrity Appeal: Matt Damon (left) andMinnie Driver (right) appear on Ching's website, whichshows dogs being tortured, to highlight his crusade against the dog meat trade

He achieved cult-like status among USanimal lovers after claiming to have been shot at, beaten by thugs and to havehad the barrel of a machine-gun put in his mouth in a series of dog rescues incountries including China, South Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

After nine months of solo missions inwhich he claimed to have almost been killed a number of times, and to haverescued 300 dogs, he was ready for something more ambitious. He released hiscelebrity appeal days before the infamous dog festival at Yulin in southernChina in June. During that event, thousands of dogs, many transported in packedcages from big cities, are killed and then eaten.

The volunteers responded to Ching’s Facebook appeal forhelp in what he told them would be a ‘historic’ mission to shut down slaughterhouses by paying owners and thenrescuing 1,000 dogs from certain death.

In the shambolic rescue that followed,Ching’svolunteers took 300 dogs to a shelter in the city of Nanning, 130 miles fromYulin, set up by his charity the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation. A further700 went to Buddhist sanctuaries after Ching struck a deal with monks to buythe dogs between them.

Within days, dogs with disease anddistemper began dying en masse in their cages at one of the Buddhistsanctuaries where –unknown to Ching – religious beliefs dictate thatanimals are denied any treatment and instead nature is allowed to take itscourse.

The aim was to shut downslaughterhouses and rescue 1,000 dogs from the dinner table

The chaos worsened after Ching flewback to the US and then cut off funding to the Nanning shelter after aspectacular falling out with businessman Jeffrey Beri, the man leading hisvolunteer team in China.

Incredibly, Ching admits hiring mendescribed by others as local thugs to break into the Nanning shelter at nightand snatch more than 100 dogs – some already lined up with adoptive homes overseas – to take to a shelter run by his supporters 500 miles away inChangsha.

Ching accused Beri of misusing fundsand sexually harassing staff. Beri, who denies the allegations, says he hassince spent £50,000 of his own money to stay in China to care for the survivingdogs and find them homes overseas.

Beri said: ‘The only reason I amhere is to save as many of the remaining dogs that I can. When this is over, Iwould like a complete audit of what has been donated to and spent by [Ching’s] charity.’

The Soi Dog Foundation, run by BritonJohn Dalley, is paying for 70 dogs in Nanning to be sent to foster homesoverseas at a cost of around £1,500 per dog. The Humane Society Internationalhas meanwhile taken in 120 dogs and is funding their export to new homesoverseas. Another 90 remain in Changsha with Ching’s charity.

2.     The harrowing rescue mission: A cage ispacked with dogs being prepared for the slaughterhouse at the Yulin DogFestival. Ching recruited UK volunteers to save them, saying some would bere-homed in the West

A female volunteer from the US, who gaveher name only as Sarah because of abuse and threats she says she has receivedfrom some of Ching’ssupporters, said the June rescue went disastrously wrong from the outset.

‘We thought therescued dogs were all going to a safe house in Nanning,’ she said. ‘Instead, 700 of them ended up atBuddhist sanctuaries and most died because they didn’tget the care they needed.

‘If they had been leftin the slaughterhouses to be hit on the head and killed, it would have beenbetter than the suffering they went through.’

Sarah said she and other volunteerswere also ordered to leave 100 rescued dogs in their cages in Nanning from 7amuntil 4pm in sweltering conditions so that Ching could be photographed with theanimals.

Ching ordered Sarah and othervolunteers to leave on June 23 but she refused and decided to stay on to carefor the desperately ill dogs.

She believes between up to 700 of the1,000 dogs originally rescued are now dead. Beri estimates around two-thirdsdied.

Sarah said: ‘Marc wanted everyoneout so the dogs could disappear and die. He said most of the dogs were so sickthey would die.

‘But I can tell youthat of the dogs given care, 90 per cent will survive. For those not givencare, 90 per cent will die.

‘Marc has raisedawareness of the dog meat industry but at a great cost to dogs themselves.

Ching

‘I was led to believewe were going to rescue the dogs, give them proper medical care and place themin homes. I didn’t know we were going there to pullthem out of the slaughterhouse then just dump them.’

Concerns over Ching’s tactics surfacedthree months before the Yulin rescue when he visited the Soi Dog Foundation inPhuket, Thailand, and took a dog with severed paws for adoption in the US. Helater claimed on his website he had rescued the animal from the dog meat trade.

3. The desperate aftermath: Dying dogsat a Buddhist sanctuary where Ching's foundation placed 700 animals. Ching didnot know that the Buddhists would not help sick animals, and many of the dogsended their days in agony

‘I told him repeatedlythose dogs were not from the dog meat trade but from road accidents and crueltycases in Phuket,’ said Dalley.

Ching blames the error on a mistake by hisassistant.

Ching

Dalley suggests Ching failed tointervene when he filmed shocking scenes of cruelty used in the celebrityappeal to raise funds. His videos show dogs being hung by the neck, dogs withtheir paws hacked off, and a dog being strung up by the neck in a public parkin Indonesia and yelping as it is blow-torched.

Dalley said: ‘In one in Indonesiayou can see at the beginning a guy puts his thumbs up to him [Ching] as if tosay, “Are you ready?” At theend the guy is turning around as if to say, “Was thatOK?”

‘I don’t understand how anyone who professes to be in animal welfare canfilm that sort of thing without intervening. He could have saved those dogs.’

In a telephone interview fromCalifornia, Ching admitted making mistakes with his Yulin rescue but insistedthat he did not regret it. ‘All of those dogs were supposed to die,’ he said.

He admitted he ‘didn’t know the philosophy of the Buddhist monks’and hadn’t realised the dogs sent to them would be leftto die.

He estimated about a third of the dogsdied and claimed that some had been distributed to local animal welfare groupsto be adopted within China, explaining the disparity between his estimate onsurvivor numbers and those of his volunteers.

Ching insisted the celebrity appeal didnot raise much money.

Ching

However, a video of him in aslaughterhouse in Yulin that was released days later raised hundreds ofthousands of pounds, according to his assistant.

He said the videos on his website werefilmed while he was posing as a meat trader to get into slaughterhouses and wasunable to rescue dogs without blowing his cover.

Peter Li, Chinapolicy specialist of the Humane Society International, said: ‘We don’t believe buying dogs is the right approach, especially buying dogsat the festival and in great numbers. It encourages the trade. I hope whathappened at Yulin this year will not happen again.’
