A Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying Japan’s Kimiya Yui and two other astronauts from the United States and Russia docked smoothly with the International Space Station shortly before noon Thursday JST after a successful launch earlier the same day.

The Soyuz blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan at 3:02am (6:02am JST), before docking with the ISS at 11:45am JST on Thursday. The spacecraft separated from the rocket about nine minutes after launch to enter orbit about 200 kilometres above the Earth, according to NASA and others. One of the spacecraft’s two solar panels failed to open, but the docking with the ISS was carried out as scheduled.

Yui, 45, and the others entered the ISS Thursday afternoon.

Yui 45

This will be Yui’s first stay in space, making him the 10th Japanese astronaut to travel in space — including Toyohiro Akiyama, 73, who flew in 1990 — and the fifth to stay aboard the ISS for an extended period.

Yui is scheduled to stay in the ISS for five months, during which time he will conduct scientific experiments in zero gravity using Japan’s experiment module Kibo (Hope), and also launch satellites. In August, Japan’s unmanned cargo transfer vehicle Kounotori is expected to dock with the ISS. Yui will operate a robotic arm to grab the approaching vehicle.

Yui will return to Kazakhstan aboard Soyuz around December 22.

Yue

The launch was initially set for May, but was postponed for two months after the failure of an unmanned Russian cargo ship. This cut one month from Yui’s originally planned stay of six months.
