How many times in the past week do you think your life was affected by a robot?

Unless you have a robot vacuum cleaner, you might say that robots had no real impact on your life.

But you’re wrong. Let’s take a look at some of the ways robots are being used right now but that you probably have no idea about.

Food sorting robots

If you eat rice, chances are that every grain you consumed was sorted by a robotic machine with a lightning-fast vision system.

Rice-sorting machines are miracles of automation and most people have no idea they exist. Did you actually think rice grows as uniformly (in colour and shape) as it appears in the bag you buy at the supermarket? It doesn’t.

But did you know that many nurses, paramedics and doctors now train on robot patients.

These training robots can simulate various conditions and give student health workers the ability to practice diagnosis and treatment of various conditions before they go near a real person. You can think of these robotic patients as being like the flight simulators that airline pilots use during their flight training.

Some of these medical training robots are life-sized and look like a real person, but some are more specialised and might be representative of just one part of a person.

Did you go shopping or order anything online? Did you know that many items you buy are partially moved from where they are made to where you receive them by robots?

Some container ports are now partially automated. The huge containers are offloaded from ships by human operators controlling cranes.

So that’s just six ways that robots may have affected you in the past week. Of course there are dozens more ways in which robots are likely to have affected your life; this list is just a taster.

The point is that the so-called upcoming robot revolution that is often talked about in the media is already happening. It’s just that most people don’t notice.

Not sure many of these are robots in the classic sense. These just appear to be automated process machines. Not much different to automated looms or tune playing pianolas. My concept of robots are machines that can be programmed to perform different functions and have some sort of basic feedback loop that determines their course of action. Even a basic ‘if-then-else’ line in their coding doesn’t make them a ‘robot’ perse.

When I taught computing, I used to ask my students - ‘you’re impressed with your 64 bit computing running at gigahertz speeds storing terabytes ? Gigahertz has 9 zeros. Terabyte has 12 zeros! Wow already.
The average human brain has about 100 billion neurons. Each of these neurons can have up to 15,000 connections with other neurons. So the possible memory storage capacity of the brain is 100B to the power of 15000 - or 11 zeros multiplied by 15000 - so let’s say a number with 165,000 zeros.
How’s your fancy computer with the capacity of 12 zeros look compared to the average human brain with 165,000 zeros … ?

Can’t agree with your definition either. There does seem to be a need to draw a line between “machine” and “robot”.
The distinction that makes sense to me is that robots have a significant level of physical autonomy. Things that follow an obvious program (indirect human control), or are an under direct human control, are just machines. Things that have autonomy but no physical control would be genuinely intelligent machines, which we don’t have (yet).
So by this, the washing machine and rice sorter, the elevator and training “dummies”, and drones are all just machines. Lets save the term “robot” for a meaningful distinction, rather than marketing hype.

我也不同意你的定义。似乎确实有必要在“机器”和“机器人”之间划一条界线。
对我来说,区别在于机器人有很大程度的身体自主权。遵循一个程序(间接人工控制)或直接由人工控制的东西只是机器。有自主性但没有物理控制的东西将是真正的智能机器,而我们(目前)还没有。
因此,洗衣机、分米机、电梯、训练“假人”和无人机都只是机器。我们应该把“机器人”这个词留给一个有意义的定义,而不是市场炒作。

Andrew, it is a little late to save the term “robot” and it does have a meaningful distinction. If it accepts programming, processes input from its environment and performs complex tasks, then it is a robot.

现在来拯救“机器人”这个词有点晚了,它确实有一个有意义的特性。如果它接受编程,处理来自其环境的输入并执行复杂的任务,那么它就是一个机器人。

龙腾网 http://www.ltaaa.com机器人应该起码有两种:1.智能机器人  2.多程序机器龙腾网 http://www.ltaaa.com

龙腾网 http://www.ltaaa.com现在的洗衣机,基本都具有芯片来管理多任务模式,无非就是没有智能分析和自我判断能力而已。
