The most famous man in history? Highly subjective! Depends on which field we think of. And what about women? Don’t they count? Or must we place women in a women category secondary to men? Highly debatable in the 21st century!I checked a list where, according to Time, the magazine has ranked the 100 most famous persons. Interesting, but I will say also Time has here been highly subjective! For example has Elvis Presley been ranked higher than Robert E Lee and Lenin, and far higher than Otto von Bismarck. As I said highly debatable! And Charles Dickens is ranked the second most famous author in the world, only next to Shakspeare……..! And Theodore Roosevelt is ranked far higher than John F Kennedy and Ronald Reagan….!The 8 first rankings of Time are:1. Jesus 2. Napoleon 3. Muhammed 4. Shakespeare 5. Lincoln 6. George Washington 7. Hitler 8. Alexander the GreatWhere is Buddha? Where is Einstein? Ok, he is on the list, but far down. And to us Norwegians, where is Roald Amundsen? And where is Thor Heyerdal? And where is Henrik Ibsen?

I’m not a Christian, but I think it’s tough to argue anyone other than Jesus.Aside from the fact that Christianity is the largest religion in the world (and predominately-Christian Western society is the most dominant cultural force in the world), Islam—the second largest and fastest growing religion—also has Jesus as a prominent figure. I’m sure there are far more Christians who know little about Muhammad than there are Muslims who know little about Jesus. No modern person comes even close in terms of contemporary or historical fame.

Your answer has merit, but is, understandably, *very* Western-civilization oriented. I wonder how many people in China and India can identify the people you proposed. OTOH, I don’t know (being a WC person myself) if there are people comparably famous in the Asian world.

Michal Schumacher
Thank you, and perhaps Gandhi comes to mind ?Here are a few more famous Asian people in my opinion:Ramanujan,Shogun (perhaps ??)Genghis KhanI'm not really sure about any more and my answer is ofcourse biased,(so please excuse me), based off of any books I've read & anything I've ever studied.

Saul Mashbaum
I simply don’t know enough about Asian culture to know who is famous in that culture. It could very well be someone I never heard of.

My first though was Jesus, but I’d probably go with Alexander the Great for this one.If we accept that Jesus really became the most famous person in the Western world after the christening of Rome in the 3rd century AD, Alexander would still have a head start of about 600 years and a bigger territorial reach for a large piece of history. He was the major role model of Antiquity. Today, people ask themselves “What would Jesus do?” but back in the day, they would’ve asked that question, only swapping Jesus for Alexander.Alexander the Great has never had a significant drop in fame and just about everyone knows him, even in the non-Abrahamic world - in India and maybe even further into the East. Christianity didn’t go there until much later, but there were cults worshiping Alexander as a deity very deep into Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. And we can’t neglect the importance of Alexandria in Egypt. The town was one of the most important places in history. It was home of Alexander’s tomb, which was visited by tens of millions of people, including most Roman Emperors, until it’s destruction. The town was also home of the Library of Alexandria, which was the biggest learning center of Antiquity, probably even in history up until the Christian created the modern university infrastructure. In conclusion, I’d say that Alexander had major influence on many other of the most famous figures in history - Napoleon, Augustus Caesar, George Washington, Adolf Hitler, and even Jesus Christ himself.Yes, I’d go that far. But that’s a topic for another time…

I'm going to give a strange answer but I'll explain why I think I'm correct.Donald Trump. Here's my reasoning. There are more people alive today than at any other point in history. Fame (to be famous) is fleeting, so I would limit the parameters of the question to be either who is most well known for a given moment in time, or who has been the most proportionally well known. 100 billion souls have existed since the dawn of humanity, so any definition other than what I posted above results in a win for Jesus. As far as sheer numbers, there are probably more people alive today that know who Donald Trump is than know who Jesus is.The biggest differentiator being India and China, where his face is still continually splashed across the front page, on TV, mentioned on the radio….but Christianity and Islam are much less so.Same thing with China.Same thing with North Korea. With Russia.Today’s media also makes it much easier to “spread the gospel”, anyone online sees his face everywhere, so I think even a reasonable guesstimate would have maybe 75% of the world aware of who he is. That's a lot. That's probably more than ever existed.

Nicholas Webb
That’s actually a complex question. Do you mean, who was the most famous person throughout history? Or just who is the most famous person in terms of numbers who knew about him/her? Because we have far more people alive today than ever before. Still, I think if you add up all the people who have lived and died throughout time, Jesus Christ is probably the best known person who ever lived.
