I have been thinking about this for sometime. It seems Japanese and South Korean movies and drama are popular everywhere while Chinese shows are not. I have thought of several reasons (not in any particular order). But before I go into it, I’m going to point out that China makes excellent dramas and decent movies.

You’re a westerner and you’ve not realised that Chinese dramas are actually quite widespread across Asia but not the west. Hence this is why you’re asking this question.
Due to such a high degree of anti-China sentiment, western companies rarely license them for western markets. Instead, they’re remaking them such as “The Three Body Problem.”
Many Chinese films and dramas are historical and the west isn’t interested in Chinese history. But many of these dramas are popular across Asia.
Chinese content is catered for Chinese viewers with a Chinese perspective. With a 1.40 billion domestic market, film makers are not interested to cater their content for the west unlike say South Korea which really does cater for western tastes.
Making films and shows for China requires strict guidelines such as no nudity, no gore and it cannot be ultra violent. Strangely these limitations are often what the west likes.

Here are a few Chinese dramas that I really like.
Three Body (just so amazing the best hard sci-fi ever, as good as the books)
The Empress of China (so beautifully shot, really just gorgeous and great music)
The legend of Miyue (just great and love the opening and closing songs)
The Disguiser (Great WW2 spy drama)
There are also some really dark and gritty crime dramas but I don’t know their English titles…

I agree, but I also think that Chinese filmmakers are more focused on their home audience than on foreign ones, and given the size of China's population, they see no need to produce films for other markets. A guy on Qura shared a story about a Chinese drama film that was screened at the Cannes film festival. The film followed a female teacher who travelled to a disadvantaged area to assist with the education of the local children. Nevertheless, the movie was not nominated because one of the judges obxted to a moment in which the kids were raising the Chinese flag and saluting it, saying the movie was only propaganda. However, the movie wasn't really but the judge didn't care they couldn't stand someone who wasn't European/American had love for his or her own country and adding that to their work.
so because of this many Chinese filmmakers and producers don't see the reason of making their movies caters to foreign audiences
