A lot of tourists, particularly younger tourists who want to 'taste' the reality of India (seems to be the case especially for French tourists), like to 'take on' India as some sort of challenge and come out on the other side. In my younger days I've even had several of this type of 'world conqueror' type of traveller tell me that they know India better than indians because they spend a night in a slum or have been eating on the streets etc. (WHY THOUGH?)
Most people (including indians) are not made for the kind of budget travel that truly 'budget' travel in India is all about. There is no baseline for what is considered appropriate/clean/safe in these kinds of scenarios (speaking as someone who has travelled across India 30+ times, from bigger tourist towns to places in the North-east with no electricity)
There is absolutely no point in putting yourself through bad hotels and trains IF you have the means to pay for better. Hotels in India are cheap, travel is cheap and you should always look at 3+ star hotels, and buying planes or luxury train/bus where possible. Poverty porn is not cute, and India has some of the best mid-top tier experiences to offer in the world.

No, I don’t insist on anything other than respect and there is a line which to me is altogether obvious. Poverty is not entertainment it’s a tragedy. There are 1.4 billion Indians exposure and knowledge of the poverty in India is not the issue. Nor is the cheap apparent sympathy of foreign tourists the solution.

What will you see from the trip photos over and over, smiling faces, lots of instagram worthy pictures with kids. The tour sites assure you it’s safe to go just don’t bring valuables of course. Maybe bring 20 rupees to throw on a few kids faces along with the assurance that some of the profits of your 20 dollar usd tour go to help the people in the slums. You are now a philanthropist for all to see.
Want to help those people, commit to donating to a legitimate NGO, give until it hurts. Let the people in poverty and in the slums live a dignified life without faux sympathy.

While it's not quite the same as I was just passing through to get somewhere else, I've definitely encountered people eager to talk with foreigners in those environments (the cynic in me initially believing they were effectively begging, but seemingly not - unless they were going for subtlety). I've also seen numerous documentaries where people have actively wanted to show their lives to others to counter the inadvertent narrative you're pushing (that their lives are unbearably awful and your mere presence distresses them).

I am that person. I went to America twice 2012 and 2013 and spent the whole time in small rural towns in Maine. One thing people are missing is that if you go to the places that don't normally have any tourists then the locals are much more willing to engage with you. I would get invited into peoples homes who i had just met, try and do that in any destination set up for tourists.

I went to India for the first time a few years ago with a friend and absolutely loved it. We didn't really have any bad experiences at all while we were there. Even all of our trains arrived on time. We travelled on a budget, staying at highly rated hostels like the Zostel chain and sometimes at 1-2 star hotels. We always travelled via 1st class train (which frankly was adequate at best so we didn't want to travel on the lower classes) and on Indigo Airlines for one leg. The hostels we stayed at were perfectly fine, on par with anything you would get in SEA or Europe. They were clean with friendly staff and in good neighbourhoods. I don't see any problem with travelling like this. Yes, we saw poverty while exploring but I imagine that's near impossible to avoid in India and we didn't indulge in it by going on slum tours or anything like that. We were perfectly aware that there are nicer parts of the city as well. Our first hostel in Delhi was in one of the wealthier parts of the city, for example. I will say though that middle and higher classes of Indian tend to be very classist towards their poorer countrymen, which you can see elements of in this thread as well. People are people. Some luck out in life while others do not.

Yes!! I have told this to anyone who has expressed an interest in going to India. Travel in luxury (or to the extent possible), as USD goes a long way. You will experience India as soon as you land. You don’t need to put yourself through any more difficulty. India is chaotic - enjoy the nice the hotels and transportation when possible.

Haven‘t had such impressions in other countries so far – and I always make use of every class of accommodation (from hostels to ressorts) during my travels.
