Culturally, yes. Just read the historic texts of Japan, their government building names, historic temples and place names…etc, all written in Chinese. Even the name of the country in Japanese—Nippon (Land of the Rising Sun)—was given by the Chinese emperor to the people who live in the land in the direction that the sun rises. Of course, the sun actually rises east of Japan proper. Finally, just ask any Japanese the meaning of “Kan Ji” of the Japanese language. It means Chinese words.
