This lamp is something I want to share with you on the World Environment Day.
This lamp from China’s Han Dynasty has a history of over two thousand years. It’s very popular due to its unique and advanced environmental concept.
This lamp was unearthed in Hebei province In 1968. It’s name “Changxin Palace Lamp” is gained from the inscxtion "Chang xin Shang Yu" (meaning "Chang xin Palace Lighting") carved on its body.
During the Han Dynasty, bronze lamps were often in the form of animals. The Changxin Palace Lamp is the only known human-shaped bronze lamp from the Han Dynasty. The lamp's overall design depicts a palace maid kneeling while holding a lamp in her left hand. Her right arm is raised high, and the wide sleeves naturally cascade down, ingeniously forming the top part of the lamp.
The lamp can be divided into six parts: the head, body, sleeves, curved screen panel, lamp dish, and lamp stand. Each part can be easily disassembled and reassembled, making it convenient to move the palace lamp and clean the lamp ash.
Astonishingly, it can adjust the direction and brightness of the light, similar to the desk lamps we use today. The lampshade consists of two curved screen panels that can be closed into a circular shape and fit into the slot of the lamp dish. One of the screen panels can be opened or closed horizontally to adjust the direction and brightness of the light.
During the Han Dynasty, animal fat was commonly used as fuel for lighting lamps. Although it served the purpose of illumination, the burning of animal fat resulted in significant smoke and dust, often leading to polluted indoor air, hazy smoke, and a pungent odor, thereby polluting the indoor environment.
The lamp connects the sleeves of the "palace maid" to the body, forming a smoke exhaust passage.
The design of the Changxin Palace Lamp reflects the care and concern that the Chinese people had for the environment 2,000 years ago.
Brilliantly engineered! Smoke and ash rise, bronze helps to heat, you can direct the light and also block the wind from hitting it. Beautiful in it’s simplicity.
Agree with you
Ro bad they don't have the same commitment today
Too bad you should ought to travel to China and see
Fascinating but i wouldnt say the lamp is geared towards the environment in particular. I just think the clever designer just didnt like smoke in his house
I think the writer means it helps to maintain a comfortable environment within the room, as opposed to protecting ecological systems. In which case, it's certainly true but perhaps could be translated better.

This is just some regular quora Chinese propaganda.
I'm curious, what's the political message you've spotted? And what conditioning was required, to become so perceptive?
Before we can bother about the environment of the world, let’s clean up our own houses first.
Hence as commented: the lamp is house-friendly, but not environmentally friendly.
You are absolutely right. Environmental science as we know nowadays was non existent then. It is also true to clean up the mess in your own house before one can/should worry about the rest of the world, like not tearing up a signed agreement on combatting climate change and preaching to others.
We were carbon negative in those times
That is the march to destruction- your wishes do not change REALITY
I believe one should clean up their own mess before preaching.

That itself shows his care for his environment- his house.

Incredible invention!
Agree with you
I assume the patent for this lamp should expire long time ago
In a matter of weeks, I should be able to buy a replica online.
Just kidding
Manufacturers in China: Which do you want?
Rajat Loomba
All
所有。
This is beautiful and amazing , I will love to buy some of it if only they are for sales
There is yet another Chinese invention that was said to baffle the Modern scientific communities for maybe hundreds like 2 hundreds years, if I remember it correctly.
It is a bronze polished mirror whose reflection onto a wall or a screen will show the hidden secret images, yet nothing can be observed by just naked eyes on that reflecting bronze surface. The author may even know about it already. If so, Hopefully, the author can help present it as well. Thanks.

I’m glad someone seems to have figured out how it works, though I’m unable to comprehend the explanation. However, it leaves me with greater respect for Chinese ingenuity that was able to create the minute differences of thickness of just one micron without any modern scientific measuring tools at that time. Salute!
My brain just fell out!
Thanks for sharing, makes me more amazed of what ancient people can do
The mirror is thin and the letters are thicker so the light penetrates the thin mirror part instead of the thicker parts as it would need more light, but too much light will penetrate the whole obxt, so the steady beam of light then casts shadows on the surrounding thicker embossed areas….this is just my thoughts as I didn’t watch the video

It's so curious to see this magical mirror.
The Chinese people will always find solutions to any problems they face
Actually it tells me that in every generation a genius is born, it just depends on what they have to work with that really helps them to shine.
similarly, an idiot and/or sucker is born every second in the Western hemisphere….
Why would an idiot be born only in western hemisphere?
My guess is that talents are born more or less everywhere.
However they are more likely to perish under a dictatorship and develop in a free society
Invention is absolutely amazing, but this doesn't show concern of Chinese towards environment, they made this just so their houses do not fill with smoke which is an irritant.
Brother, being as an Indian, respect the innovation of others too. Awareness and cleanness always starts from every home
The starting point to a clean world is your own environmnet, unless you are one of those who keeps his house clean and throws garbage outside.
Converting air pollution into water one, isn't environmental friendly. It's just personal care at best.
So. Personal care and environmental friendly are “mutually exclusive?” It can't be that the personal care portrayed by the lamp design is friendly to the environment? Can it?
Do you know where the trash of developed nations go? If you know then you will certainly know that personal care and environment friendly are mutually exclusive.
That should work for all the polluting chimneys!
Very ingenious !
Wow! So interesting!
Awesome. I wouldn’t mind having it for blackout times.
I don’t think I’ll ever stop being amazed by the Chinese. What an awesome people.

though a great innovation, I wouldn’t say it was due to concern for environment as such, yes people cared about environment back then but they didn’t have any clue that smoke can hurt the environment like today we have, what they did care was the inconvenience of the people using lamps, they collected the smoke to prevent them from being affected by it not the environment.
There are many inventions from ancient China.
I think that my favourites are Paper-making, Silk, Time-measuring devices and Gunpowder.
The China of today seems to be more focussed on copying other country’s inventions, which is sad, because China has such a great potential to contribute to World knowledge for the benefit of mankind.
Chinese people are very intelligent and skillfull.
What I don’t understand is how could they be conquered by japanese.
May be its a peaceful nation and doesn’t engage in war ?

China’s engineering astonish me, back when i went to tiananmen palace i see the water passage, they’re simple yet complicated , i mean it’s cool even for me as modern human, even their waterways are better than my house plumbing system ☠️. Very well thought
It's called civilization for a reason. Excellent.

This cute ancient lamp is so compact and be taken apart like legos to be washed,so interesting. Most importantly , it's made of bronze(metal) .
I think ancient Chinese inventions are advanced alien civilization inventions modulated for use in the past which is future intelligence modulated to use in the primitive past with this understanding you don't have to ask what was most amazing , imagine you visited a advanced alien civilization and everything you saw advanced there you copied it and modulated it in a primitive way to use it in the past where life is backwards that's what ancient Chinese inventions are all about
Can't agree more.
