The military budget is essentially treated like the personal property of the officers and their complicit businessmen. The mark-ups for military procurement are generally in the region of 200%. Because of this their hardware are either limited or of low quality, since they have to pay 3x the market value of each item. Equipments are also usually in a low state of readiness, due to the lack of necessary supplies and spare parts, the money for which are siphoned away.
If the country’s military ever have to face off with any of its first world neighbors (Australia and Singapore) it will definitely severely underperform. Thankfully for the time being thats extremely unlikely.

The independence war, we stalled enough the Dutch+Brits and buying time. Then managed to gain help from two sides of global super power. Soviet gave us cool toys, and uncle Sam threatens their Marshall Aid for Dutch. Diplomatic capability like this is the actual weapon that was deployed that time.
Well, past is a great teacher and a good tool to predict future. We did it in the past, we can do it again in the future.
We saw how angry people supplied by weapons, such as Vietnam, Afghan, and Ukraine can hold out powerful military. Quarter billions of them angry people spread into several island with its own jungles and huge sea borders. Give them some anti-air, ship and missiles and see what happens. Ask Dutch and Brits. they got experience regarding these.
All that if we somehow cant keeping friend. Which is the opposite of what we are doing all this time. Try to be as friendly as possible. Avoiding allied with one side only to gain some enemy. Trading with all side in geopolitics. Active in multiple global forum while holding neutrality. Making us much more comforting to be around a less threatening. Being an invisible giant does have its perk.
Also, yes. We already top 13 military strength while only pouring only 0,8% GDP to military. (8-ish bills from a trill). While average countries spent 2-ish%. We could triple it with some spare left. But, increasing that number just increasing tension. (I also want to mention the corruption but thats will trigger me another furius wall of text)
I mean, imagine if suddenly we have several carrier hulls laid down, rocket launch schedules, and assign some bomb test site. I’m sure the neighbors Five Power Defence Arrangements paperwork will be dusted off again from the shelves.
Much better to allocate those money for a nice resort in one of our beach. Coconut drink taste really good in warm bright day. Everyone should try it.
