For so long, I've looked up to this place and its people and now I'm getting sorrow with negativity. I planned to stay a week, but I see no point. I am not sure but do you hate asians?

As an Asian who lives in Canada and has visited some European countries, I can say that racial discrimination towards Asians exists everywhere in the West, but is more overt in some European countries than here in Canada.
In Canada, most of the time, racism towards Asians is more passive aggressive, meaning people generally don't physically or verbally attack us, but treat us differently, such as classmates totally ignoring our presence and secluding us, or cashiers smiling to people of some other origins but harsh face and no greetings or smiles when it's our turn.
In some European countries, racial discrimination can be more straight-to-the-face and borderline harassment. The Netherlands is actually not that bad in my opinion, some of your neighbouring countries are a lot worse in this aspect. I remember watching a South Korean vlogger being harassed really frequently while visiting a neighbouring country of yours. People in the restaurants doing "slanty eye" gesture towards her, people saying "ching chong" to her, a girl punching her in the face on the street, and another girl putting a sticker on her camera. And the worst part is that nobody defended her. If it was in Canada, most of the time people nearby would defend the victim and even help call the police.

As an Asian, lived in USA for 5 yrs and moved to AMS now, I can confirm it is true. And when I encountered racism in USA, passerbys were always help me out. Comparing in Europe, people around didn’t show any empathy.

Yes, North Americans are more likely to intervene when they witness social injustice than Europeans. Also, North American legal system is less tolerant of racism behaviours than in most European countries. Canadian police takes racism complaints quite seriously and often label them as hate crimes, while in most parts of Europe, they don't bother investigating such cases, especially when the victim is Asian, because we have the reputation of being "docile" and are unlikely to protest, demonstrate or cause trouble.

I’ve grown up in Toronto and I have never observed any generalized, widespread racism to Asians. (and Im also mixed with Asian and Indian)
If anything, it’s Asians who are racist toward other people.
I don’t mean to be argumentative or invalidate your experience, but I couldn’t let your sweeping generalizations leave the wrong impression of Canadians.

here in Toronto, discrimination against Indians is openly tolerated. there was a recent thread that reddit surprisingly let stay up, accusing Indians of shitting on the beaches. and go visit any of the toronto, ontario, and canada subs and there’s a least one post or comment every week about Indians ruining the housing market, conducting mortgage fraud or immigrating in too many numbers.

I'm not saying that EVERY cashier does it. I mean that there are SOME that do it. There is a fundamental difference here. Maybe you're lucky you didn't encounter anything, good for you. That does not render fake other's experiences. Toronto and Vancouver are not the best examples either. Smaller cities or suburbs with majority white residents can be vastly different.
And I never said anything about "generalized, widespread racism to Asians". You are putting words into my mouth. I merely pointed out that there are SOME people who hold racist opinions towards other races. But more in a "I don't want to harass them in any way, but nor do I want to interact with them at all unless absolutely necessary" way. I've seen students who only talk to fellow white classmates in university. And I've come across people under 35 who grew up in Toronto and have hundreds of friends on FB but not one Asian. How is that even possible? But they are not overt racists because they don't harass others. I'm not saying these people are omnipresent in Canada. I'm saying they exist.

maybe a little harsh, but man, in my 30+ years living in NL (brabant) one thing i really noticed when interacting with people outside of my bubble, so non-NL people, is that NL is just extremely racist but no one knows because we all are and it's just a thing you don't "notice" unless pointed out. and obviously "het was maar een geintje, moet kunnen toch?", the classic victim blaming. where you blame the victim to make yourself not feel bad/guilty.

I have an Asian wife, and the first reaction my friends had was “sucky sucky 10 dollar” referencing Southpark’s episode of Cartman being a Vietnamese prostitute. That kind of racist stuff doesn’t fly for any other culture than Asians, I don’t know what’s up, I think Asians in general are less vocal about their rights.

My observation of racism in NL, including amongst well educated professional colleagues, is that the Dutch really have these strong stereotypical ideas of what each nationality/ethnicity is like. I think it's part of the whole Dutch need to conform and all be the same, like a shared joke. So someone will make the same old lazy "all Morrocans are drugsdealers" or "Sambal bij?" comment and because it's a shared thing that everyone knows all the Dutch people laugh along with it to fit in... while the international people look at each other uncomfortably and can't believe they are hearing this shit.
To me the Netherlands is like the UK when I was growing up in the 80s, when people would call each other paki/spaz/poof/darkie and worse without even thinking about it.. I think the UK has changed a lot since then and people are much more aware of what is racist or not. The Netherlands has not.

Dutchies can be really tribal, man. I couldn't believe when I was told that there are so many different ethno-regional (I don't know how to call it) groups here, in this tiny country of 17 milion people and that for example Brabanders and Hollanders often find each other ridiculous. That people laugh at Limburgish accent. Stuff like this. I guess those shitty jokes are also an excercise in group building. After all, you end up with Us joking about Them.
On the other hand, it's not really different in my country of origin, really. People can get a nihao there as well, 100%.

Foreigners complain about how hard it is to integrate into their local community in the Netherlands. But it's not even about what country or culture you come from, someone from Brabant has the same experience in Holland! Personally I love living here because I always felt like an outsider, even in my own country, and here EVERYONE is an outsider so you can just accept and enjoy it ...

Yeah I'm 31 and from the UK, living in NL and i find it jarring when my SO says some racist stuff like that. Sometimes i get annoyed as i don't understand how hard it is to just... not say that stuff? He is not actively mean or hateful to other ethnicities but I guess it's more "acceptable" here. But yeah you are right about the UK about 15 to 20 years ago we would say words like paki, spaz, retard, gay as an insult etc. But culture gradually changed and that would be a lot less likely to be heard now. I would certainly not be saying them anymore. Not completely though of course still plenty of bigots there for sure.

Only on the surface tbh, I often think countries that believe that they have solved racism/sexism/ homophobia etc. kind of forget to continue to critically uate everything they do and then you end up with racial micro aggressions and sentiments like 'I fully support LGBTQ I just don't want to see them in public' kinda stuff. I definitely see way more racism directed towards Asians in the Netherlands than anywhere else I have lived or been in Europe

Amsterdam is the most multi cultural place in the entire Netherlands. If you’ve experienced it there my guess would be that it’d only be worse in other parts of the country

Sorry, but Amsterdam is in the Netherlands. It's the capital and most populated city, Dutch postcard to the world, a major European hub and tourist attraction, and according to recent data, it has a majority Dutch population. It's really easy to try to denounce a place or distance it from the rest of the country every time negative attention is brought to it. However, no matter how much people try to do it, the fact is it will continue to not only be an integral part of the country, it'll remain representative at a large scale.
Some people may believe that Amsterdam doesn't accurately represent the Netherlands or that it sets itself apart too much from the rest of the country - the same is said of Berlin, for example -, but there's always historical reasons for this. I'd rather see people claim a place and own up to mistakes committed there rather than try to pass it off as someone else's problem as if it's just an appendage they'd get rid off if they could.

Asian here. The racism in the Netherlands is so unbearable sometimes I’ve thought many times about leaving as well. I just don’t want to give racists the satisfaction and power to influence my life decisions.

I am ashamed to say I too sang along and even did the eye thing as a small kid. Makes me cringe so bad thinking back on it, but at the same time I was just a dumb kid following the teachers example and I don’t think at that point I had ever even spoken to an Asian person in my life. I hope schools are better now. There should be more awareness for this.

Genuine question: what would you like bystanders to do if something like this occurs?
I (F20something) genuinely want to step up if I see this happening, but I don't want to overstep and be the "white hero". So I can learn a lot if you would like to share your perspective.

Seeing people like you makes me feel way better. It would have been helpful if you came to me later and say that you don’t agree with these people. When everyone is silent while the words were being said, I just thought everyone agreed.
