I think the US is equally facing challenges but the biggest advantage of the US over Europe is its energy independence and high agricultural output
That's why The USA can sustain themselves, Europe on the other hand not so much.
the US is one federal state and the EU is not
@Moss the US also just has a better geography then Europe has.
You are right The Is economy of the US is over reliant on 4 states Calafornia, Texas, Florida and New York. All facing huge problems of inflation, immigration, and water shortage.
@ciaranbrk You look at each country and you will find some provinces are more productive than others. Yes there are some states that are not as important as California or Texas but those states play a role in their own way. Water shortages are going to be a lot more frequent but it is not uniquely American problem . We have seen the drought in China and Europe last summer as well.
@ciaranbrk you can argue those states have the largest number of Fortune 500 countries but you must realize small businesses are the engine of the US economy- that’s all over the country. American entrepreneurs do not come from those 4 big states btw. They come from all over
EU is working on energy independence. E.g. Greece and Cyprus have huge gas fields in the Mediterranean and EU is heavily pushing on renewable energy sources.
Hello! I heard that in 2022 Poland's economy surpassed Portugals. Being Portuguese living in Poland i find the comparison between Southern countries and Eastern interesting. Eastern countries have only recently entered the EU while southern have been in for decades. Will the eastern economy surpass the south?
You forgot the billions poured to Poland by the EU
2021 Poland gdp per capita: 18k
2021 Portugal gdp per capita: 24.5k
Poland hasnt surpassed Portugal yet
@Mile "2022 Poland's economy surpassed Portugals."
posts 2021 gdp per capita
@Mile purchasing power is higher in Poland as living costs are higher in Portugal. 1euro buys more in Poland.
@Nuno C Poland 2022 gdp per capita 18.2k
Portugal 2022 25k
hi I'm from Czechia and we're almost on the same level (GDP per capita) as Spain. And according to some data we've actually surpassed the Spain and are catching up fast to Italy. It seems really unbelievable to me, since about 7 years ago Italy and Austria were advanced economies in my eyes and everyone has felt the growth and also we've actually growing population, when a lot of people from eastern Europe are coming to our country and our birth rates are not as bad.
@BluuGinger41 hmm the only thing, I'm not sure... For instance: what's a typical salary there, Prague and the rest of the country? Here minimum wage it's just 1100€

southern countries focus too much on tourism and forget all about what really moves a country like industrialization and so on

Nailil that's not true tho, Italy is the 2nd largest manufacturer of goods in Europe just after Germany and its top exports include pharmaceuticals (1st producer in the continent), precision machinery and components used in the automotive, hydraulic and aerospace industries, for example.
@hshdudhs hduduxubes Poland has always been an economic powerhouse throughout history that's why their neighbors always wanted to fight about it.
Poland was pretty well destroyed by the world wars and soviet Era, but the region is a good investment and always has been.
@BluuGinger41 czechia has more young people, Italy has more elderly.
Poland has germany next door providing jobs and investment . Economically Poland is going to do great. I would still prefer to live in Portugal. Money is not everything. ( I have been in both countries)
To be frank, before WW2 the economies of countries like Estonia and Latvia or Czechoslovakia was already ahead of Southern Europe, including perhaps even Italy as a whole (if we discount industrial North). It's because Estonia and Latvia pre WW2 had similar foundation to stand on as Finland, they were the best and most industrialized regions of Russian Empire having great contacts with Western Europe.
Soviet rule for 50 years changed that, but Estonia now is emerging again, the foundation was there, Soviet rule just stopped the growth.
Europe has been around for so long, I'm actually not surprised Europe economically is no longer powerful like that anymore. But I do not expect the decline to be drastic.

China has been around longer haha
@Aidan Aldrich true, but we are talking about Europe bruh
@Moss I'm just saying that there really isn't a correlation between a nation's age and economy
Empires fall ,Europeans used to be a 3rd world country at one point in history, especially 1000s AD and BC.
I would also want to point out that productivity in Northern Europe including France and Germany are roughly the same as the US. The eurozone crisis mainly hit southern Europe, Brexit teared the Uk apart (they had a productivity problem before) and Eastern Europe is catching up, but from a much lower level. The US is currently above the potential GDP growth through a decade of massive deficit spending.
I think the issue is partly cultural. Europeans, and european businesses in particular, are more risk averse than their US counterparts. Many would rather stagnate than risk their company for a chance to out-compete their rivals.
Well, post-2010 the US did relatively well, East Asia did very well, while Europe has seen something like Japan - stagnation.
Because the dollar is the world's reserve currency.
In Europe we tend to put more emphasis on the person rather than the economy. We have all kinds of welfare nets - free/affordable education, free/affordable healthcare, more enlightened policies on migrants, prisoners, we work less so that we can spend more time with friends and family. We are less stressed in our working space and study and for all those reasons and more we are also happier.
As a worker, I would rather live in the EU than US.
If I owned a business it would be a different story.
Working in the EU sucks. You will never get succeed. It's why I came back to America. If you are a slacker or an underperformer with no ambition and hitting the bar after work, then I suppose it's not so bad.
@Marc V couldn’t agree more. I did a year of work over there and nobody would stay late to try and get ahead and every single day, they’d hit the bars

The fact that 2 world wars were practically the main stage in europe and most of it was in ruins while the us profited the most during both.
Research about the Marshall plan...
Which gave huge industrial benefit to USA and basically opened the European market to all American companies.
yes they gave money, but far from enough to rebuild the continent
