There is one thing I’ve noticed in common between all these wildly different highly successful people I know.
All of them are unafraid of dirty work. You show me a kid who is willing to scrub the toilets or do back-breaking work at grueling hours and I’ll show you a person who will be on top in a breathtakingly short period of time.
Conversely, so many times when someone says: “Well, I’m not gonna do that!” thinking that it’s beneath them, I know I’ll find them in the same spot 10 years later.

There was once two brothers, Leandros and Erato, who lived in a mid-sized town together with their father.
Their father was a successful entrepreneur who owned a huge rice farm.
He had grown his farm from a small patch about the size of a garden to acres that produced tons of high-quality rice and employed many people in the village.
As the brothers came of age and their ambition manifested, they began thinking about their goals in life.
Their father had both of them working around the farms to teach them the value of hard labor since they were teenage boys.
He told them that he had no intention of handing them a vast fortune.
Their father, being a responsible man, wanted them to work for what they had so they could one day appreciate success as reasonably self-made men.
Leandros didn’t mind his father’s decision; he felt it was the right one.
Eratos, on the other hand, would complain about his father being selfish every time he woke up and was reminded of the hard day of work ahead.
Each day while they worked, Leandros and Erato would talk about their big dreams.
They both would talk about the cars they wanted to buy, the houses in the town that they each wanted to live in, and the places they wanted to travel.

After 8–9 hours of hard labor, the work day was over, and the young men had some free time on their hands.
Leandros had been saving his money, and he finally had enough to purchase a tiny patch of farmland from his father.
His father wasn’t a heartless man, and he happily sold part of his land to his son who had earned it through labor.
Leandros began working away at his farming patch for an additional 2–4 hours after his 8–9 hour day.
The work wasn’t always enjoyable, and Leandros was horrible at running his rice farm at first, but he was willing to sacrifice his free time to accomplish his dream.
Eratos, meanwhile, always spent his money on drinks with his friends at the local bar.
He would go there almost every day to joke, flirt with the girls, and have a lot of fun.
As he did during the workday with his brother, Eratos continued talking about his big dreams with his friends.
By the time they were finished at the bar, Eratos was too tired, to do anything about his ambition and it always late at night, so he went straight to bed.
Of course, this isn’t to say that Leandros was a workaholic who never got any enjoyment out of his life.

Eratos looked worn out and bitter from all the years of partying with nothing to show for it.
He didn’t understand why he never accomplished his dream.
He grew to resent the farm system and his father, thinking it to be unfair.
Why did he have to work so hard when his father could give him inheritance?

Meanwhile, Eratos was furiously jealous. He now worked for his brother, when years ago they were at the same level.
One day Eratos asked his brother, “Why are you more successful than me? It doesn’t make any sense. We grew up in the same household and worked on the same farm for all these years. What gives?”
Leandros replied, “It’s simple, dear brother. Talk doesn’t grow rice.”

The most successful people spend a lot of their free time, after work and taking care of family, improving themselves in certain areas of their lives.
Some successful people might go to the gym to improve their health and fitness.
Some successful people might read books, write on Quora, or attend online courses/webinars.
Some of them might relish their free time to create quality memories with their families and improve their relationships.
The most important thing is that successful people don’t just talk about their dreams and goals, they take action towards accomplishing them almost every single day.

So, the way the average person spends his or her free time looks more like 80% mindless relaxation and 20% growth/productivity.
Then after 20 years, these people wonder why they’re in the same place or even a worse situation in their lives.
Don’t get me wrong. Rest is essential for a healthy and productive mind.
Not to mention, it’s important not to take life too seriously and enjoy it while we are still living.

Of course, if all you do is work all the time, all you’ll be at best is the richest and loneliest man in the graveyard. At worst you’ll die an early death caused by stress and overwork.
With that acknowledged, if you want to be successful, you do need to find a constructive ratio of productivity vs. enjoyment when it comes to how you spend your free time.
Whether that ratio is 80/20, 90/10 or 95/5 depends on how ambitious your goals are.
Use critical thinking and decide for yourself. Chances are you know what you should be doing with your free time deep down.
If nothing else, be like Leandros, not Eratos.

This is Jack Ma.
The founder of the company Alibaba. With an estimated net worth of $40 billion his success was born from early failures.
After college, Ma applied for 30 jobs in his home city of Hangzhou, China. He was rejected from every one.
At KFC, 24 people applied for the job and while 23 were hired — he wasn't one of them.
The same thing happened when he tried to be a police officer. This time four of five applicants were hired with the exception of Ma.
Most people will try again after they fail once.
Some people will try again after they’ve failed multiple times.
Very few people will try again after having failed hundreds of times.
People who have failed, tweak their efforts every time they don’t find a road to success and as a result they come closer to success each time they try something new.
Successful people can be recognised by the amount of effort they’ve put into making something work after it has failed.

I have a very specific indicator of how successful a person will be in school: The students whose first question for any assignment is a variation of “what’s the least we have to do to get a good grade” are not the students who are the most likely to be successful in the following school years.
I teach middle schoolers (ages 12–14), so, when they’re done with my class, they still have at least four years of high school ahead of them. I’ve kept in touch with many of my alumni over the years, and all of the unsuccessful ones did the same thing in my class… they were minimalists when it came to work. If I asked them to write about something, they’d ask me how long their paper had to be, because they were going to aim for the minimum.
The most successful students didn’t ask for the minimum length for their papers. They just wrote what they needed to tell the story they wanted to tell.
I saw adult versions of work minimalism when I was a retail manager. Twice per week, we received a shipment of 10–18 pallets of products that needed to be shelved. I’d assign someone to put everything from one of the pallets on the shelf. The least successful employees… the ones who got the fewest hours and smallest raises… would do exactly what they were told, and nothing more. They’d stock the shelves, but leave the empty pallet on the floor, because I didn’t specifically tell them to put the empty pallet in the pile of empty pallets behind the store. They were minimalists. They did exactly the least amount of work they had to do.
If you want to be successful, don’t be a minimalist when it comes to tasks.

When there is an assesment centre for a financial graduate placement in a bank, and 20 university students are invited, I can tell which ones will be most likely successful
The students who seem lazy (+ for success)
I prefer lazy students, as they have a natural ability to tackle a lot of work in a clever, straight as an arrow kind of way.
The adrenalin driven students who are rude (Oxbridge or Ivy) and show this air of arrogance to other students (- for success)
These little turds are extremely annoying. Some of these are in group 1, the lazy fellas, but with those you can't tell they have Oxbridge or Ivy background.
I've seen ivy/oxbridge people naturally exclude students during an assesment centre who were from a lesser university. Students who think they are better than others because of their background are little shits. I love pushing these guys to the max. Whoever passes my questions, bravo to them.

One of the questions which I like during an interview, is a situation where the graduate is asked for option A or option B, based on an investment analysis. However, the trick is that both options are full of shit. I want that graduate to tell to my face that both options are full of shit and that the question is rubbish for x,y,z reasons.
Adaptability and ability to survive out of your comfort zone. (+ For success)
When you put 4 graduates in a team, and ask
One needs to do the presentation, one does the calculation, one writes everything up accurately, and one does the negotiation with the other teams. Who wants to do these bits?
When they tell what they wanted to do, you give them the other roles…
All this nonsense about listening first before talking, “waiting for your chance”, be patient, and whatnot. Rubbish.
What people forget is that a lot of “successful people”, don't consider the long weeks they pull, as “hard work”. It's pursuing a hobby, with as side effect money, wealth and success.
