The rebuttal to "[Country] did something bad" usually involves some kind of whataboutism. There really isn't any strong argument against trying to be better as a world and end the bad things that we used to do, so people have to rely on the "Europe/USA used to do it, so why can't non-western countries have their fair shake at it?" argument.
