As a proud Korean who was born and raised in Canada but spent six months living in Korea when I was 28 years old, I am sad to say that it looks like life in Korea is getting more difficult for the masses by the decade. I have two children with my wife in Canada, and I can obxtively say that if we were living in Korea, I think we would wonder long and hard before having children. The endless competition and pressure to keep up with appearances seem absolutely brutal for children and parents alike.
作为一个骄傲的韩国人，我在加拿大出生和长大，并且曾经我28岁时曾在韩国生活过6个月。很遗憾地说，韩国民众的生活在过去10年里似乎变得越来越艰难了。我和我的妻子生活在加拿大，我们有两个孩子。我可以客观地说，如果我们生活韩国的话，那么我们肯定会对是否生孩子这个问题做一番长久而又认真的思考。韩国社会无休止的竞争以及人们所面临的外貌压力对孩子和父母而言都是十分残酷的。

There are also big economic problems in raising children in Korea. High house prices are also a problem, and the youth unemployment, which contributes the most to the fertility rate, is also a big problem.Also, the cost of education for children is too high. The university entrance rate ranks first in the world (70% in Korea). This is an indicator that is significantly different from the second-ranked Canada (Canada 60%)The education cost of children under elementary school is the second highest in the world after Hong Kong, which ranks first. The study time of teenagers is also the number one in the world.Also, the system for women to return to work after childbirth is poor.The reality is that returning to work after childbirth is practically impossible unless you are a large corporation or a public official.
阻碍韩国人生孩子的一个很大的因素就是经济问题，此外还有高房价。而造成这一现象最大的因素在是居高不下的青年失业率。而且，韩国的教育成本实在太高了。韩国人上大学的比例为70%，这一数字高居世界第一，并且远远甩开了排名第二的加拿大（60%）此外学前儿童的教育费用也排到了世界第二，仅次于排名第一的香港。韩国青少年的学习时间也是全世界最长的。此外，韩国在支持女性产后返岗这方面也做得很差。现实情况就是，如果你并不就职于大型企业或者政府，那么女性在生完孩子后重新返回自己之前的岗位几乎就是不可能的事情。
I too am a Korean-Canadian, and also not sure that I would have had such laissez-faire approach to having children if I lived in Korea. I find Korea excessively obsessed with education and how it becomes the center piece for one's social status. That's why they spend so much money on children's education. And having gone through that crazy process, I don't blame Gen Y and Z for not wanting to have children, they know their would most likely have to go through the same process as themselves.

I'm half Korean and I was raised in the US. Honestly even here it seems hard to have children. I want children someday, but I'm very hesitant due to how bad the economy and opportunities are in the US. It's so expensive to have kids here :(

South Korea is one of the richest countries in the world. Them not having babies has nothing to do with, "not being able to afford". They simply just don't want them. Usually, in vast numbers of cases, the poorer the person income is, the MORE children they have. Not sure why you guys keep attributing low birth rates to "affordability". Go to the poor country side of South Korea and guess what, they have more babies than the middle class.

@Lee33 what do you mean "not having to do with it"? SoKor is a first world country but that doesn't mean all the people living there are rich. There's still middle class and lower middle class. Some are poor too. Yes there are other factors but financial instability is one of the big reason.

I am Korean, and deeply concerned about the upcoming future of my country. I think the key to low birth rates is to focus on making women's lives better. A lot of women consider themselves to be socially underprivileged compared to their male counterparts. Economic incentives won't work for this problem at all. Not only the government but the whole korean society itself must work together.

Been back since 2012 after living in the states and as a Korean national, it's sad to face the reality of peers my age. Like many of those featured in the video, I believe the government should provide a "healthy-environment" where it is appropriate to raise a child. Working over time, the wage gap between the top 10 companies vs small to medium-sized companies is really getting
out of hand. Government throwing money at the problem ain't gonna solve much imo.

I think millennials are globally feeling the same way. If I can barely afford rent, food and bills then there is no way to afford a family. All prices are insanely high and there's only so many hours in a day to work and run a household so birth rate is dropping in so many countries.

Raising a child in Korea seems stressful for the child tbh. I've had Korean friends tell me that they spent around 16 hours a day studying, that is insane. Getting good grades is one thing,but it's too competitive to be correct. It's a lot of pressure.

That guy's comment on educational costs is spot on. Spending all that money just to be marginally better at testing on information you mostly won't use in the workplace and does not actually make you more intelligent is just wasteful.I know China recently banned for-profit education supposedly since the government thinks the increased costs to after-school education are keeping families from wanting to have more children.

One of the main reason is that raising a child costs a lot. Korean emphasizes education extremely so most students go to 'Hagwon' which is the private institute and they are very expensive.
