What a silly idea. As a waiting room for candidate countries, this is fine, but the UK joining is a stupid idea.

I disagree completely, depending on what shape it takes. Previously there were 2 options, either to have it as a holding shop for accession candidates which will have trading perks and a seat at some tables without actually joining the EU. I'm still not clear on what the value of this european nations club supposedly is or why it is in the UK's interest, or what it accomplishes that couldn't otherwise be discussed via usual diplomatic channels.

I would have been happy to leave the political EU but remain associated in the European Economic Area.

The truly bad thing was we worked with a lot of Europeans who were absolutely fine with how he voted because they disliked the EU as well.

Speaking as someone who has moved to and worked in a number of countries, the viability depends greatly on your circumstances. When I moved in the past it was literally a case of grab a bag, find somewhere to stay (minimal requirements needed to be met) and job done. If I/we didn’t like the place I/we could move. I worked in a field that was easy to move around in. Years later we tried orchestrating a move abroad (shortly after the Brexit vote) and it proved extremely difficult, expensive & problematic.
It’s simply not feasible or affordable for many people to uproot, identify new areas abroad that fulfill requirements (which may require time-off & multiple trips), find equivalent/suitable jobs, find suitable schools, leave behind all friends and family etc. If you’re in a relationship and or have children you have multiple people to take into consideration (ie one of you may have aging parents who require someone nearby, for example. Taking children away from grandparents, friends and familiar surroundings can also present complications; sometimes there are factors like approaching exam dates).

You can want something badly while still having insurmountable problems or unacceptable trade-offs. Not everyone has an easily replaceable job and many people have commitments. You may really want freedom of movement back, but when there are great costs and sacrifices on both sides of the equation it’s not always possible, even if it’s something you want very much.

I think it’s a very practical simplification to signing partnerships. It sits in between a country having to go through the harsh and long process of joining the EU (and willing to), and having to sign many bilateral partnerships. It could actually be a good thing
