Earlier this week, Sylvester Stallone listed one of his houses on the market for $130,000,000.00. That’s not surprising. When you mostly write, direct, produce and star in seven sequels to one of the most popular movies in history, money comes with the territory. Lots of it.

Several days passed. As he wallowed in his misery, sulking and feeling sorry for himself, Stallone heard about Chuck “The Bayonne Bleeder” Wepner, going fifteen rounds with the heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali. He later watched the fight on ABC’s Wide World of Sports.
This was not possible. Wepner, a mediocre fighter, known for his blood splattering in the faces of people seated in the first three rows rather than his boxing skills, was supposed to lose..badly. Instead, he almost beat the man often considered the greatest boxer of all time.

Stallone was inspired. Although, not a writer, he drafted a scxt based on a fighter, who against all odds fights the champ. It took him less than a day. Tweaking it took another three or four days.
He gave it to his agent who passed it around. It was great; everybody agreed. A hundred-thousand dollars was offered. James Caan, who had recently played Sonny in The Godfather, would play the lead.
Dead broke, Stallone turned it down.
Three-hundred thousand dollars was offered.
Again, Stallone turned it down. He knew that this was his opportunity. He just wanted to play the part of Rocky. That’s all. Everything else was secondary.
Finally, MGM accepted the offer, giving the unknown Stallone $35,000.00 for the scxt and the lead. Bets were off. It was doomed for failure, but the risks were insignificant. The entire cost for the making of Rocky came out to less than one-million dollars.
Stallone took the money and bought back his dog, Butkus, to “co-star” with him in the movie.

I was at a trade show when I learned my company had been purchased. I was instantly rich. When the excitement faded and I was in my hotel room alone for the first time, I sat in a chair. The TV was off. My mobile was off.
But as I sat in the chair I started to wind down, I deflated into a relaxed state I didn't know existed. I felt as if I had been running my entire life and now I could stop and relax. I didn't have to struggle anymore. I could rest.
My biggest fear in life had been that I would end up living in a cardboard box under the freeway and eating Alpo. That fear vanished. I felt secure for the first time in my life. That was the biggest surprise for me about getting rich, that I could finally get off the treadmill.

I was not a big consumer. I didn't have expensive tastes. I didn't care about mini-mansions or Ferraris. I only cared that when I got old I would still be able to eat real food, sleep in a real bed and have a roof over my head. Once that was assured, I was able to stop running.

I made $30M from my previous tech company.
For me, the most surprising thing about being rich is that it's an incredibly isolating experience. What I mean by that is you can't really complain about your problems except within your small circle of rich friends. Otherwise, you will sound like a douchebag. Even if you do, non-rich people can't really empathize with you.
There are a few problems associated with being rich such as general (lack of) motivation for work, family/friends asking for money, worry for how to motivate kids, spouse with different attitudes toward life after getting rich, potential spouse being a gold digger, unexpected jealous reaction from friends/family, pressure to deal with more complex tax, estate planning and investment planning and etc.
The joy of "set for life" doesn't seem to offset the anxiety from hoarding the huge sum of money. In addition, when you don't work because you are rich but can't hang out with your friends who have to work during the week, you feel like an outcast of society.
Overall, being rich is very isolating and that's the most surprising thing I have experienced.

I have almost four million dollars in the bank, made mostly on the side while working a tech job. Not filthy rich but I have more in savings than anyone else I know in my peer group. The first thoughts I have off the top of my head:
- Don't tell anyone. At my last job over time, I foolishly somehow mentioned to my co-workers that I've accumulated quite a bit of cash trading and it changed the impression people had of me, and not for the better. These are people that I had worked with for years and considered good friends. Nobody ever asked for anything but there was an undertone of jealousy and little snarky comments sometimes when I absolutely never flaunted anything. It never got better even though I never mentioned it again. When I changed jobs to a new company, I vowed never to mention it anyone again under any circumstances. Can't advise this strongly enough. Don't tell anyone. Friends, etc. Tell your spouse it's retirement savings, not mad money.

- Material things don't do anything for you. I know, it's such a cliche, but take it from me, someone who thought I was different. Depreciating assets. All it does is alienate you and the people you impress with that kind of spend isn't really the kind of lasting people you want in your life.. Now I live a comfortable life consistent with my tech job income.
- While I might have a bunch in savings, I think real *wealth* is getting into a situation where you have passive income every month, meaning you do nothing and get a check cut to you every month. If I don't trade or don't work my tech job, I won't have any new income. I think real wealth and security come from building up an empire (rental property, self-running business, etc) where you can have a check coming in, even not a huge one, that requires to do nothing.
- My stress level is low. My real job can blow up and I can coast as long as I need until I find my next gig. Not that I ever want to do that but it's nice knowing if you fall, you have a net.

My answer is anonymous, as I found one of the surprises about gettting rich is that those who are not rich yet think most people would want to flaunt it, like Donald Trump. It's not so. Most 'millionaires next door' are quiet about it, and for good reasons - to keep the right friends, avoid the wrong people, and 'fly under the radar' of unwanted attention.
Thanks to an excellent investment and trading record, I turned $30,000 of a nest egg into ~$5m in net worth over 2 decades. Actually it went above $5m in 2014, and then I managed to lose about $1m in net worth in 3 months when everything went wrong with my trading (an interesting psychological experience, to sa the least) . I've recovered somewhat since that.
We have friends who are good people, but not nearly as well off as we are. You'd not notice us as 'rich'; our lifestyle is actually fairly middle class.

The guy who wrote "The Millionaire Next Door" noticed that too. He noticed that most millionaire's were like my wife and I. We tend to be married (divorce will kill your net worth, ask Mr Hamm); second, we have mostly frugal habits, not spendtrhifts; third, I spent some time on my investments, even when I had a fulltime job it was my 'hobby'; my investments were like 'little soldiers' I sent out to work for me, the higher ROI the more productive they are, my portfolio was and is like a garden that is constantly tended. Without my habits of taking care of money and thrift I never would have been able to save enough to create the brokerage account that I parlayed into an account worth millions. Those habits haven't left: I don't waste food, buy clothes when I need them not for the latest fad, and movies and entertainment are occassional not constant things.

With kids in school, friends, church, etc. its better to stick to a lifestyle that keeps your social life intact than one of isolated luxury. We eat out less than most; in fact, my wife remarked that friends who are living 'on the edge' (been through bankruptcy etc.) eat out more than we do.
Who knows how wealthy I am? For years practically nobody, even my wife had only vague inkling . Our kids just know we are 'fortunate'. When I was working, I told nobody of my moonlight investing / trading activity. I am still trading, investing, but the job and career that gave me the starting nest egg is no longer there. It is superfluous when I make enough from investments that I end up in the highest tax bracket, and a 'regular job' would pay me half less than I pay in taxes now and use up more time. But because I don't have a regular job, even my Mom worries about how I'm supporting myself.

My situation is both a liberating one and a challenge; my investments are not a full-time job, but enough of a time sink that fulltime work is a distraction. It's a dream situation; and yet, I'm the same person I was long ago. I'm just the dog who finally caught the car. I wanted to be financially independent, and ... I made it.
Rich or poor, you can define your own life purpose on your own terms. Thanks to my situation, I can write the scxt of the rest of my life in ways I hadn't thought possible. The other thing rich people do that poor people dont: Think LONG TERM. I have a plan for the rest of my life - 50 years of living and more.

I'll add one more perspective to this. Many people have answered this question on the basis of going from average to very wealthy. Let me offer a perspective of going from very poor to average (or perhaps even wealthy on a worldwide scale) and why I now consider myself the wealthiest person I know.
When you are very poor, you have real problems, not 'my boat won't start' problems. Poor problems are problems that can kill you and your family. I made some mistakes in my life, nothing most people would really look down upon (no drugs, no crime), just financial choices (mainly involving taxes) and job choices that didn't pan out, plus unexpected medical bills of course.
Here are problems that you have to worry about when you're really poor:

A poor problem is knowing that you have rent due soon and no money coming in to pay it - your landlord can kick you to the street at anytime and you will literally have no where to go except stay on the streets.
A poor problem is when your wife has to sell her wedding ring (the only thing of value your family owns) for pennies on the dollar so that your kids can eat for another few week.
A poor problem is knowing that you only have 2 weeks of water and electricity before they finally turn it off.
A poor problem is when you have to actually weigh the pros and cons of going homeless.
A poor problem is keeping your life insurance policy active at all costs just in case you need to have a fatal 'accident' to bail out your family. (My wife and I discussed this on numerous occasions - if you think you have problems, wait until you have to have this conversation and seriously consider it, then you will know what a real problem is).

Some people may ask why I wasn't on government assistance programs. 1. I hate those programs and I never wanted to teach my kids that it was ok to take handouts. I still believe this. 2. The first time I had to take a handout, I felt like a true failure. In ways it was worse than going hungry. 3. On a side note, after being in the situation where I should have been on handouts - I can say for certain that these programs should not exist in the first place, except maybe for children who will starve without them. I met many people who take advantage of these programs and will purposefully never get off them.
Regardless, it's not as easy as you might think to get help from the government. They like to verify income, tax returns, all kinds of things. Unfortunately it looked like I made a ton of money recently but it had all gone out the door to pay medical bills, past due utilities, past due credit cards, and most importantly, past due taxes. Taxes are what really did me in.

I did try to get my kids on a state run health insurance for poor families, but despite the fact that I could barely feed them, the government didn't think we were poor enough to qualify due to the past year's tax return. It's the ultimate irony that while I was paying back my past due taxes, I couldn't qualify for any of the benefits that I was supposedly paying for. I never could swallow my pride enough to declare bankruptcy, not that it would have done any good as far as what the IRS thought it was owed.
So people talk about not being happy with their wealth (the big money kind of wealth). There is something to that and maybe it's just a lack of appreciation for the alternative. I finally got a good job and we became part of the middle class again and I am happy and thankful every single day for it. Having a meal that actually consists of meats and vegetables on the table for my children brings me more joy now than I ever thought it would. we are stable enough to afford a decent place to live and a car to drive to work now (plus I'm not thinking about driving off a bridge anymore so my family can collect the life insurance).

Sure, I would love to have more, everyone would, but I know it won't make me happier because I now feel truly accomplished, proud, and happy every day. I can look my kids in the eyes for the rest of our lives and never feel ashamed of what I had to do to keep us going. Day to day middle class problems now seem like nothing because I know what real problems are. Try going hungry for awhile and you will learn what real problems are.
So to answer the question, to be wealthy, at least how I perceive it now, is a wonderful feeling.
