Japanese experts have issued a warning about polluted drinking water caused by US military bases in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa. Excessive organofluorine chemical compounds have reportedly been detected in drinking water supplies. This group of chemicals is used in a wide range of industrial processes and is harmful to the body if consumed. It can cause elevated cholesterol, changes to liver function, changes in thyroid hormone levels and reduced immune response. An investigation has not been carried out, because the US has not granted permission.

A similar thing is happening with South Korea too. A large ex-US base in Seoul has been recently emptied and was found out that the entire terrain is polluted. Unfortunately the US is using a loophole in their flimsy contract to avoid responsibility (the phrase "respecting the land as best as they could" is pretty vague for legal agreements), and now the Korean government has to use their own money and resources to clean up the place while the American army is getting cozy in their new spot 60km down south.
