As a South Korean, I can attest that elder poverty is a very REAL Problem. The issues pointed out in squid game are very real as well. Perhaps a bit dramatized in the show, but real nevertheless.
I agree. I am also korean and very proud of Korea, but that doesn't mean Korea is a perfect nation. The poverty gap in korea is getting worse.
one of the major factors that's stopping young Koreans to provide sufficient financial support to the elderly is the rapidly rising cost of living. In SK, everything is concentrated in Seoul, the best companies, the best colleges, the best health care systems, the best infrastructures and so on. so when young Koreans graduate from colleges, everyone crams into Seoul, with large population, housing price and rents become crazy expensive. after paying housing expensive and other living expensive such as food, clothe and travel, young people barely have anything left, let alone supporting the elderly. one of Pres. Moon Jae-in's biggest campaign promise was to control the rising housing cost in Korea, but he didn't do a whole lot, and now he is no longer president. XD
Similar thing is in Russia: life tends to concentrate in big cities, so real estate prices are sky high there. But I think the problem is mostly in people's minds. They still think the life is only worth living when you live in Moscow, but I live 20 km off the city limits and still in only an hour from the center of Moscow because of suburban electric train.
Korean train system is at least as good as ours, I believe, so why don't those students live in the suburbs?

He was pretty bad at getting anything done
Why Korean government didn't disperse development to all across the country especially to the countryside area, instead of just concentrating them in Seoul only?
Isn't Busan area one of the most developed as well?
@Chinguun Erdenebadrakh the population density between Busan and Seoul is not even close. if i remember correctly, in 2021, the total population of Busan metro was only somewhere around 2.8 to 3 million. but at the same time, the total population at Seoul metro is around 11 million.

@Василий Коровин i'm not too fimilar with Moscow, but when you look at other huge Asian cities like Tokyo and Shanghai, the entire metro is expensive. i guess you could live very far away from the city, but that means you give up on amenities, like bars, restaurants, shopping malls, and other things. for young couples with kids, they also want to live closer to the city, because that's where all the good public schools are.
Why are people not looking for another cities which are not that expensive?
i guess this is a common issue around the world too :( same situation in Malaysia
@Bappa Rawal the total GDP output of Korea is 1.8 trillion nominal in 2021, Seoul a single city produced 384 billion in the same period. that's 22% of the entire country's GDP. so technically you could move to some small city in Korea, but you probably won't have a job, or a very bad job. LOL.
reminds me of my country Indonesia, where everything is centralized in Java, particulary Jakarta making the island the most populated island in the world because every indonesian come to Java/Jakarta hoping for better life. scary to think what kind of situation we'll be facing in the next 20-30 years if we do nothing about it.
the gov tried to fix housing numerous times, but the market wasn’t easy to control
@Donguk Shin I agree with you. There are also many external factors beyond the control of any government.
It is also important to save up money... invest, and most importantly, there should be a safety net provided by Government
@S Y while it is true that London is the centre of UK, only very few top universities in UK are based there.
I think Korea need to look at USA, Germany, or Italy. Top universities are dispersed throughout the country
You also gotta consider the a lot of young Koreans tend to spend money on nonessential stuff, like expensive clothing, shoes and electronics. A lot of young Koreans go into debt, making their parents having to help pay for what they owe

I feel the "crammed into the major city" issue is common in a lot of countries.
@Chinguun Erdenebadrakh Pusan is a tourist destination and a trading port, but hardly industrial/economic center that can attract young people
I lived in South Korea for a year, and yes the street food vendors were all operated by elderly women. Very nice and the food was tasty, but yeah the competition between them was stiff and their prices were quite low.
Its interesting that they were able to make such large cuts to the pensions. In the US the older people are the ones with the highest voting turn out, so its very difficult to touch their benefits
Being a Korean is a really tough! They have been working very hard in order to make their life wealthier and happier after the Korean War. Thanks to their strenuous efforts, retirees have to live from hand to mouth. In addition, Korean people are facing a military threat from hostile neighbor, and young Korean people have to enter military service. Harsh entrance examination race also cast dark shadow on young Koreans. In spite of their great efforts, a lot of Korean people cannot enjoy happiness, and no wonder some Korean people call their nation as "Hell Chosun".
In Japan, the inflation rate has remained low for a long time, and prices are stable, making it a good place to live for old people with savings. Not good for the economy, though.
It`s a matter of relativity. Japanese elders could live a relatively better life if compared with Korean counterparts, but a lot of younger Japanese have a pessimistic view about their retirement life due to an aging society of fewer children. They are concered whether they could receive enough pension after retirement.
This will be the situation in the U.K. in 10 years time. The private pensions are pretty useless unless you are a millionaire.
You have to also realize that most of these people grew up before the 1980’s when it was in a military dictatorship. They barely even had time to try and build wealth for the future :/
I live in korea and I live in a high rise apartment tower... the people across the street (like just a few meters) do not have running water. I see so many ladies picking cardboard out of trash ... it breaks my heart. Some people do love to work but some must work and that hurts.

Koreans are aware of this I’m sure they will address the situation. The elderly are respected in Korea and I’m sure they will find a way to improve things for them.
in Korea, age discrimination in the workplace is rampant and companies start getting ready to fire you around when you turn 50.
Houses in korea/seoul are very expensive, thus most people have a "small" house.
Same problem seems to appear in Singapore as well
One thing not mentioned is the relatively higher prence of lookism and ageism in Korean society. Potential employees are often not hired because they are not attractive enough or not young enough.
South Korea is such a wealthy country. Surely this could be easily solved by just redistributing the wealth a little more equally.
But the politics in South Korea blocks any wealth redistrubution. South Koreans working class people will become poorer than their Japanese counterparts in 5-10 years.
