Japan is safe for four main reasons. I'll compare it to America since that's where I'm from:
Japan is much more ethnically homogenous. Racial tensions are tiny compared to the U.S.
Japan is much more economically homogenous. Income differences are very small compared to the States. This leads to less jealousy and incentive to rob/steal. CEOs don't take multi-million dollar bonuses when the company is in trouble.
No guns. Actually, you're not even allowed to walk around with a knife in your bag. Straight to jail. Some of my friends argue that having a gun keeps them safe. But if you need a gun to be safe, you're not in a safe place.
Does your son not experience any problems with bullying, etc. in school? Japan has this rather vile student culture of bullying people who are different, particularly if they're not Japanese, and a teacher culture that condones it. Yeah, they'll smile and treat you well and be nice to you on the surface, but once you leave the house they start to gossip and whatnot, and the general feeling is that you never really assimilate with society if you're not Japanese.

Bullying is a problem in Japan but in a different way in the U.S. When I was junior high in America, bullying was violent; pushing someone around, beating them up etc (I was on the receiving end). But in Japan, bullying is more about not being accepted by the group/class. They get ostracized. It is a problem but in the last few years I've seen schools introducing stricter policies against it.

Emotional bullying can be every bit as bad on a child as physical bullying. I know a mixed (part Japanese) girl in this country. She was 13 and really a beautiful girl. She was being emotionally bullied. She blew her brains out with her father's (a cop) gun.
I agree. Emotional bullying can be just as bad.
Yes, I was bullied and slandered when I was a child (10-18) but I grew up to live a better life than all of them. They hurt my self esteem really horribly but never made me want to harm myself. I only wished I had enough money to sue them. I mean, slander IS against the law!
I think a lot of this makes sense. However, it is somewhat laughable that you say there are fewer racial tensions. Japan is one of the most overtly racist nations in the world, and one of the nations who actually have bans against non-Japanese entering an establishment. It is well known that Japanese are completely unaccepting of anyone other than Japanese. Even ethnic Koreans who were born in Japan and speak fluent Japanese are never considered Japanese.
I hear what you're saying but I didn't say racism doesn't exist, I said the racial 'tension' is tiny in comparison. For example, there wouldn't be riots if a foreigner got shot by the police. That kind of tension just doesn't exist here.
But this type of societal structure has it's drawbacks, too. Even without guns (the suicide weapon of choice in the US), the Japanese have a suicide rate 1.5 to 2 times that of The United States.
It's certainly not perfect, you're right. And suicide is a serious problem, I witnessed a person jump in front of a train. But it is safe compared to America.
This is to do with their way of thinking and mentality. I now understand how traditional Japanese people think. It is pretty depressing when one has to be in a frx of mind to succeed without a failure, there is no concept that people learn from mistakes as in the western society (although the society in big cities are very westernised).
Nice answer. The rate of gun deaths in DC is astounding and yes, it probably means that people have to carry to feel safe, whether they're in a gang, or protecting their family or just have to walk home at night. I enjoy living in Hawaii and feel safe, mainly because the rate of gun deaths are very low.
My father lived in Japan for two years, right after World War II and he LOVED the Japanese people. Thought of them as among the kindest people on Earth. I believe what you say about Japan above.
My grandfather was also there after the war and was impressed with the harmony of the culture.
Also, japan doesn't supply weapons to terrorists or support terrorism.

"if you need a gun to be safe, you're not in a safe place." so very very true. I just don't understand the American doctrine of "more guns lead to a safer society".
so much to learn America! wishing America will be a better place to live tomorrow!
I have been 30 years living here in Japan and I really sure that japan is the safetiest country in the world.
Japan is not the only country with those characteristics. Many Asian countries do too especially Singpore. Sure, it keeps its racial homogeniety pretty perfect by excluding foreign settlers.
No guns, yet they have a suicide rate nearly twice that of the US which is awash with guns. Hmm. Note that most firearms deaths in the US are suicides.
Japanese don't commit many crimes in Japan where there are no guns but they don't commit many crimes in the USA where there are plenty of guns. It's their culture which suppresses crime, not the lack of guns.
