Being from Los Angeles and having lived there for 43 years, I assumed nothing. When I moved to Korea, going from a vast “melting pot” to a 99.9% homogenous country was pleasantly shocking!
I moved to Paju and it took me over a few months before I saw a foreigner here.

My earliest encounter was at a nice restaurant with western dishes. Some white gentleman was serving us and as soon as I spoke English he got all excited and shared a beer. He was a Canadian who was married to a Korean and he was telling me how he missed speaking English.

I know exactly how the man felt. I sometimes went for weeks without speaking to another native speaker of English.

I understand . There are very good consecutive translators on one’s phone. Isolation doesn’t exist any more regarding the availability of means of communications, on the other hand having physical contact with humans is getting lesser every day which is frightening.

The translation apps I've seen for Korean to English are clumsy and lack nuance. Good enough to take a taxi and get a hotel room, but you won't be discussing philosophy with them.

At least you guys tried slowing down your English. What I do instead is much worse. I pick the native language and speak in a broken tongue to whichever country I visit. I speak random Korean words, random Spanish words etc :)

In my case, Korean language practice came in the US itself, when we got Korean engineer interns. Was trying to learn how to order in Korean restaurants, and practice Korean from time to time.
It was also useful for watching Korean dramas and more. Lots of people in the SF bay area who dabble in Korean just for watching dramas.

I was the only foreigner in a very small town in a rural county near the DMZ. The project I was working on was owned by an Important guy (at least locally) so everyone knew who I was, which made my life easier because context is very important in a tight knit community like that.

That's the way to go. The locals draw you closer when you try to speak their language. I have been staying in a foreign country for the last 20yrs. I speak a lot of local languages. I know don't sound good but they understand me very well. We also use English a lot. Fortunately there is a whole lot of guys from my country here. I mean millions of them.

The same thing happend to me after coming back to the U.S i was living in small town Mexico for 3 years and probably only spoke English like 3 or 4 times with other people. When i came back i would speak slowly and sorta analyze what i said as i spoke would cause me to stutter. It was pretty embarrassing as i was still in HS junior year back in 2013. Thankfully now a days its all natural.

Can you read the Thai scxt? At least Korean is easy to read, so menus and bus routes were easy to follow.

Yes I can. Took me a year of reading street and shop signs. Now I can even read subtitles in films. (after 3 years of being here)
I still struggle with the “stylized thai” - which is like a simplified one they use while printing. Some of those characters take more time to read but I have no issues with regular thai scxt.
And yeah Korean must be the simplest scxt. I think you can pick it up in a week easily.

I’m a Thai. I commend you for trying to understand and communicate in the local language. A lot of westerners in Thailand have lived in the country for many years but hardly ever speak Thai, if they live in Bangkok or large cities where English speaking can be quite common, or even attempt to, which is a shame. But you have gone one step further by trying to read. Bravo!

Thank you. One of the cute things I find is when I go to a cafe and if the menu is printed only in English, the barista will read through each of the sections in Thai to me. I will proceed to listen patiently and then try to order it in Thai to make her feel good (otherwise it would be awkward if i just replied in english).
In a way, I think if I was a farang, people would never speak Thai to me in shops etc. As an Indian, many people think I’m Thai for some reason. So, when I see a farang speaking Thai, I feel even more impressed because that person made a better attempt to learn the language than I did.

Having seen how well homogeneity works in places like Japan and Korea, it made me really question the value of multiculturalism back home in the U.K. Its really difficult to put your finger on, but there’s something about both countries that just seems more harmonious.
To be clear, I think a multi-ethnic society is fine, but genuine multiculturalism creates lots of fractures and parallel societies, and I think ultimately the costs outweigh the benefits. It’s important that a nations people are ‘marching to the same tune’, so to speak.

It is not easy to erase your culture because you moved to another, many Arabs do the same when they get older, all their past years were to save money to build a house and die back in their own home land.
