Yes! Studies show all those extra hours dont increase productivity anyway.
And wasting alot of Time!
They don’t increase productivity but they increase income.
@Mika Yass Lee if u dont increase productivity u cant increase income. The hourly wages will drop.
japanese workers are known for having low productivity to begin with. their work day is not focused on efficiency, it is about staying long hours no matter what.
Humans are not made to work, we are lazy as hell. Thats our nature...
@Teringventje 60-80 hours a week isnt all actual work. There is a taboo of leaving work before your boss, so even if they should finish work at 16 , they stay 3-4 more hours, do as little as possible, only to preserve their face among co workers.
Everyone knows that, the longer you work the less productive you get
guys ! japanese do not work hard ; they work long hours thats why their productivity is so low. a
it depends on the industry. for example, in manufacturing business the longer hours of work is equal to more produce. therefore, more produce is equal to more products to sell. more sell is equal to more income and commission
Was able to work for a company in Japan for 2 years and you're absolutely right. We were expected to work over time, since it's considered rude to leave while we see our boss still working in his office (which most of the time he was). While people did stay longer, that time is not spent productively. People will either be taking naps, playing computer games, eating ...etc. Me and other foreign workers didn't understand it, and thought it was counterproductive so we just finished everything we had to do by the time our shift ended and left as soon as we were done. Boss couldn't complain as we had finished everything anyways. So long story short, more work time does not mean more productivity. If anything it just adds stress. I knew some co-workers who would leave at 2 am only to get back to work at 6 am the next morning for no other reason than not wanting to seem impolite.
Dude I have never met a group more brain washed than Japanese.
Japanese people are overworked and underpaid. So sad.
Wyndell Lee thats their work culture after all, you dont want to be that one lazy guy in a world filled with hard workers
@mubasora let me know how working 13 hours a day plus a 2-hour commute on a train work for u.
@mubasora but still, it sounds crazy and needs to be regulated
Javelin Melody Japanese people are overworked and depressed.
after all, if they don t work hard, how can they pay 80billion to the us army? If not, 85 plaza accord again
East asia in general is like this, I am from Taiwan and we are not anything better, you work your ass off just to pay bills, renting an apartment often cost one-third to half of your salary monthly.
Wages in Japan is very high, they are not underpaid.

@mubasora I know some Rich person in middle east just working 2 hours/day and his wealth is growing more and more every day

@Huy Giang Their cost of living is very high too, they are underpaid.
@Javelin Melody to be fair, America has work laws/regulations that prohibits the kind of exploit Japanese companies are doing. Hence you rarely if ever hear anyone in America suffering from overwork stress to the point of suicide.
Same goes my country
I'm a Malaysian that works for more than 12 hours a day with total of 4 hours for commute everyday. Being at age 30, I just got my first car and I still can't even afford housing nor marriage.
I have a Japanese co-worker and really a hard worker.
Lol @ the guy saying your work is your personal life. If you drop dead tomorrow, the company will just hire someone else to fill your place. You aren't leaving behind a "legacy" by churning out 80 hour work weeks. Employees are nothing but cogs in a giant machine and each one is easily replaceable.

think he meant legacy as in for this family
leaving money and stuff for them
@Shin X No, i dont think he meant legacy for the family. I think it's for himself. Work is his (and many japanese men) purpose of life. They live to work. 'No work' means they might cease to live - some people there did only work in their entire life, that they lose their purpose of life when they retire.
That's sad but true
I wouldn't go so far as to say that employees are simply cogs ina machine. I mean, employees and employers are people too. Yeah, their work will not mean as much to history but they can and do do a lot of good for the community and culture.
@Tobias Hurtig you cant compare your work to someone else's work, even more in japan. Have you experienced being really poor? being head of the family and not having a job and losing your honor and feel like youre worthless for your childs and spouse? Those who have know, work is your life, it is what will provide for your family future, of course its even better having time for your kids and also going to work but not everybody is priviliged to having that.

byproduct of imperial japan’s brainwashing propaganda
I mean, he's partly right. Japanese workers are asked to stay incredibly long hours, but of course you can't really be productive for 10, 12 hours of the day. Mostly they just slack off and wait for the boss or higher up to leave so they can too. It's really a bit of an issue with Japanese working environments, not so much with individuals.
"work is the purpose of your life" damn....
Than my life has no purpose

It's true, but not just work for a company. Work for yourself, your family, your friends, your community. It makes life better
But stressful and depression because of work, it's not good for your mentally. People sometimes forget our purpose of life is happiness. We work to make money so we can be happy. So it's useless if we're not happy!
Well I kind of understand what he is saying because for many Japanese people, their work and what their position in society is, is a part of who they are. Another thing is that to be honest, you need to work and make money to even live a decent life and to enjoy life. People in Japan do over time so that they can make more $. And it’s not just people in Japan. Even South Koreans work their asses off. Probably China too.
He LOVES his job ,that's what people that hate their jobs can't understand
God, no wonder suicide rates are so high, it's actually crazy how they think working 10+ hours everyday is normal
Suicide rate in other countries are much bigger than Japan
USA is only 3 places behind them on the list of suicide rates
I work at korea for 12hours a day
the problem here is not that they are working for 10+ hours, it is that they have to be there and wait until their boss goes home. they may have finished their work after 8 hours and still have to be there for another 4 hours or more.
