I worked at a slot car track in Bellevue, Washington in 1966 and 1967. There was this 9 year old kid who came in, who signed onto the track using the nickname "Trey". It was Bill Gates. And yeah, he was quirky enough to remember from back then. A pain in the ass, but in a likeable way.

我们镇的中心广场有个商店开了差不多50年了，专门卖模型火车。（名字叫火车和玩具商店，但几乎没有玩具）。那家店逛起来很有意思，假如你没有幽闭空间恐惧症的话，但他肯定是卖不出什么东西，因为他交不起店租了。他现在打算关店，搬到他自己在城外的哪栋楼里。虽然里面的东西看起来很酷，但我从没见过有人在那里买过东西。
Yes these types of stores are closing like crazy in my area. I've had a few model train shops close up within the last year. Also people are buying this stuff online now so there is no need for these stores, if this is what people want to buy.

My dad is big into model trains. He has had a train table pretty much his whole adult life after taking his trains with him when he moved out of my grandparents house. In a way, the hobby is doing well. In another, it isnt.

I have a penpal who lives in Norway! She is actually German, and we started writing back around 2003ish - the German post office had a penpal program and would send you an address in the hopes that you would hit it off and write to each other. Well, we still write to each other a few times a year and I've gone to Europe (from the US) to meet her twice! (Once to Germany and once to Norway where she lives now with her partner and kids.) We also are friends on facebook and instagram, too, so we do communicate that way, but we both think it's fun to send and receive letters.

It might not be as popular as it used to, but thanks to the rise of the studyblr community on youtube and instagram, journaling and doing pretty calligraphy has gained a lot of popularity. There are quite a few instagram accounts dedicated to penpals and envelope decoration, as well as some "penpal with me" YouTube videos or tutorials.

Yeah, drummers are like a dying breed in my local music scene. There are like three of them, all of them being in several bands already, and a crap ton of shitty guitarists. Seems like good players of every rock band type instrument rarely exist these days and if there are some, they choose to play on their own on Instagram or Youtube with every other instrument replaced by MIDI and plugins.

I've noticed a huge shift in the past 10 years. Music programs aren't churning out quality anymore. It's the parents fault. I give lessons at a youth music program and I feel like I'm wasting my time. I sit down with them and asked if they practiced. 99% of the time they don't practice. Parents come up to me and ask me why their child isn't playing on a certain song in the program or they ask why their child isn't getting better. I tell the parents that their child isn't practicing and they scoff and say they have practiced. I had one parent ask me why they had to practice if they have an instructor. I just stared at the parent till they walked away.

Scrapbooking. No one prints pictures anymore

My wife made a living from scrapbooking in its heyday. Back when magazines were still a thing, she had a lot of layouts published. The biggest magazine created a Scrapbooking Hall of Fame, and in the second or third year she was sexted for it. Then the companies that made all of the scrapbooking materials would hire her to do workshops at scrapbooking conventions, using their stuff of course. She wrote a couple of books on scrapbooking. She made so many paid appearances that two years in a row she got to Platinum or whatever American Airlines' highest frequent flyer level used to be.

Oddly enough a lot of my retired graffiti friends are into it, they buy trains and do graffiti pieces on them and trade / collect.

I grew up in a train town, and as much as I don’t like being delayed by a train crossing the road, I love seeing all the different graffiti as it goes by. The idea of a model train with appropriately scaled proper graffiti on it is making me very happy

It's interesting, because comic book related movies are some of the most successful nowadays. As a kid and teenager I was a huge comics fan, but as an adult I rarely read anything new. A lot of the new stuff deals with current events, which isn't always the best for escapism. But studios seems to scout the comic scene.

Reading. Not an original thought by any means, but I find it to be true at least on a personal level. When I was younger I didn't have internet or really any devices, so there wasn't much to do other than read. I used to get very invested in whatever I was reading and just lose myself for hours, now I tend to scroll through youtube looking for something halfway decent.
