Once again, China does not automatically reject movies about racial minorities, and it embraces culturally-specific and unapologetically weird melodramas.

Its grosses increased in almost every holdover market (+77% in Singapore, +59% in Ukraine, +54% in Thailand, +52% in Saudi Arabia, +47% in Vietnam, etc.), as generally befits mid-to-late December releases in more conventional times. This led to an overall $16.5 million second-weekend gross worldwide, a 114% increase from its debut frx. The $200 million toon, which debuted on Christmas Day on Disney+ in participating markets (including North America), has earned $32.5 million theatrically thus far in 11 overseas territories.

It opened in South Africa this weekend and will launch in South Korea and Russia on January 21. The big news is China, where it has earned $25.5 million thus far. Moreover, it’s holding its own (relatively speaking) against local blockbusters like A Little Red Flower (which nabbed $76 million on its first day, the third-biggest single day gross ever in China behind Monster Hunt 2 and Avengers: Endgame), Warm Hug and Shock Wave 2.

The superb performance of Coco was yet more evidence that Chinese moviegoers weren’t remotely put off by films about “not a white guy” protagonists, and that the marketplace that pushed Stephen Chow’s unapologetically weird The Mermaid to $565 million in 2016 didn’t mind a culturally-specific afterlife odyssey.

Hollywood spent much of the last six years reacting to the $322 million Chinese gross of Transformers: Age of Extinction thinking that China would embrace every generic Hollywood blockbuster around.

The vast majority of the Hollywood films that broke out in China post-Avatar are the ones that did pretty well (or superlative) in North America and around the world. The notion that China disdains stories about (non-Chinese) racial minorities is negated by the likes of Coco, Aquaman ($298 million in 2018), the Fast and Furious franchise (whose last three films earned $985 million in China alone), Black Panther (which earned a decent $105 million in 2018) and even Pacific Rim: Uprising.

The 2018 sequel, which only existed because Pacific Rim earned $113 million in China in 2013, traded Charlie Hunnam for John Boyega. It earned $100 million in China but just $60 million in North America. While nobody (generically speaking) in China showed up for Black Panther, Soul, Pacific Rim: Uprising or Coco because they highlighted racial minorities, nor did the casting and narrative scare anyone off. That’s not unlike how it is in North America.

Despite constant cries for more inclusive movies and TV shows, the grim truth is that audiences either don’t care or merely care that the movies/TV shows that they were already going to see (Star Wars movies, superhero flicks, etc.) are comparatively inclusive.

It’s why the same folks clamoring for representation on social media don’t show up for The Queen of Katwe, Widows or Abominable while endlessly debating whether the top-tier franchise fare they did see (Wonder Woman 1984, Soul, etc.) are “woke” enough.

Pardon the digression, but I will be bemused if Soul gets anywhere near the $189 million earned by Coco. Oh, and at this rate, the two biggest Hollywood movies in China from last year with be Coco and John David Washington’s $66 million-grossing Tenet. Oh, and this year’s biggest Hollywood blockbuster in China is almost certain to be Justin Lin’s F9: The Fast Saga. Imagine that...
