1、Quebec is generally perceived positively, with a "hey cousin from the other side of the Pond". Though I don't think we see it as part of our culture because it kinda became its own thing.

2、I don't think anyone on either side of the Atlantic really considers Quebec as french. We have the same language but they are their own thing. It's like England and Australia.

（回复4）I once was hanging out with a French guy in NYC and asked the same question as OP. I asked if the French viewed the Québécois similar to how New Yorkers view the South and this guy got super pissed off and wanted to fight me. I was seriously confused. Had been hanging out with the guys for like 2 hours at this point and he changed gears really quick.

3、They're not really considered french or part our culture, they're seen as our cousins from Canada with a funny accent

4、They are North Americans* who speak French, the cultural barrier is pretty much there. We do share a common history and plenty of French people live and work there though. We are closer to them in some way than other French speaking countries around the globe (not counting Belgium or Switzerland which are right next door).

The language has become its own thing, it's French but absorbed a lot of English into it, just like the French spoken in Western Africa absorbed a lot of local languages. It's somehow hard for the untrained French ear to grasp everything that's being said.

5、Just sharing - one time we walked into what I later found out was a separatist bar in Montreal.
I asked in broken French if the bartender spoke English and she replied that she did not.
After about five minutes, she inquired if we were American and when I indicated that we were, she said, “Oh, I’ll speak English with you guys.”

（回复2）For me it's really the use of English words (said with perfect English accent) that I find off-putting, my brain has a hard time to understand the mix of the two languages. In France when we say an English word it's with a thick French accent, it has almost become a French word at this point.

For real though, as a French who lived 4 years in Quebec, I can say that except for the language, we barely have anything in common, but it’s not a bad thing. We like each others. If for exemple a French tourist is visiting Thailand, and see a Quebecois tourist, they will most likely have a conversation and a drink, because we have this lix, we’re cultural cousin.

7、They are our cousins from the other side of the pond, Quebec and Quebecois have an extremely positive image in France, I think I really never heard anything negative about Quebec in the everyday chit-chats, there are even some people who developed a kind of fascination for Quebec. I think the Quebecois' opinion about France and the French is more nuanced, for historical reasons of course (we kind of a abandoned them to their fate). There is a bunch of Quebecois artists who regularly expand their audience to France, because, well, a 60 million audience pays better than a 8 million audience. I have no idea if French artists actively seek to be present in Quebec. I know some went back and forth like standup comedian Gad Elmaleh.

8、Really positive about it, I really like the diversity of the french language.
Althought I have the feeling that Quebec people are more used to hear french from france than French are used to hear french from quebec

9、As a Quebecois, I’ve always found it easier to hide the accent a little in order to prevent misunderstanding or other uncomfortable situations while travelling in France.
It’s extremely easy for us to do it so it doesn’t hurt at all.
On the other hand, I will never hide my accent when I’m in Québec and I realize that the shopkeeper/waiter doesn’t speak French.

10、Love Québec but I definitely feel culturally closer to countries like Germ*ny or Engl*nd, Québec is closer to Canada to it is to France

11、Is there any resentment in France towards Quebec from the hostility to helping in World War 1? There were riots in Quebec due to hostility to the WW1 military draft and very few Quebecers enlisted.

13、I read somewhere that the Quebecois accent many people make fun of could be in fact the way people used to talk in France in the early 1600'.

（回复1）I've heard more anglo-canadians make fun of our accent than I have heard french people make fun of it (even though frenchmen tend to think it is endeading or funny sounding). Worst : anglo-canadians seem to think that all frenchmen hate our accent which would give them carte blanche for their bigotry. oh well

Historically, Québécois french is closer in phonology to "noble" french as spoken by the parisian upper class of 1600-1700 than it is to modern paris french.

Most of France didnt actually speak french at the time when Québec was founded so all the settlers had to agree on a common language and the most prestigeous one won.

Basically, everybody in Québec was speaking the french equivalent of a posh british accent. 13 years after the quote, France would lose/give the province of Canada in New-France to the UK which would cut-off Québec from the rest of the francophonie and effectively "freeze" the accent.
