A paper co-authored this year by economists from the IMF and other institutions confirms that wealthier people are more likely to earn higher returns on their investments. It also shows that the children of wealthy people, while likely to inherit that wealth, aren’t necessarily going to make the same high returns on investments.

Detailed data on wealth are extremely rare, but 12-years of tax records (2004-2015) from Norway have opened a new window into wealth accumulation for individuals and their offspring. The Nordic country has a wealth tax that requires assets to be reported by employers, banks and other third parties in order to reduce errors from self-reporting. The data, which are made public under certain conditions, also make it possible to match parents with their children.

Another significant finding: High returns both bring individuals to the top of the wealth scale and prevent them from leaving it. Controlling for age, parental background and earnings, moving from the 10th percentile to 90th percentile of wealth distribution increases the probability of making it to the top 1 percent by 1.2 percentage points compared to an average probability of 0.89 percent.

Why do rich people earn high returns? Conventional wisdom suggests that richer individuals put more of their assets toward high risk investments, which can result in higher returns. But our research finds that wealthy people often earn a higher return even on more conservative investments. Richer individuals enjoy pure “returns to scale” to their wealth. Specifically, for given portfolio allocation, individuals who are wealthier are more likely to get higher risk-adjusted returns, possibly because they have access to exclusive investment opportunities or better wealth managers. Financial sophistication, financial information, and entrepreneurial talent are also important. These characteristics make the returns to wealth persistent over time. This research is the first to quantify this mechanism and show that it is likely to matter empirically.

Do high returns persist across generations? The answer is a qualified yes. Wealth has a high degree of intergenerational correlation, but there are important differences in how returns to wealth accrue across generations. The children of the richest are likely to be very rich, but unlikely to get as high returns from this wealth as their parents did. This suggests that while money is perfectly inheritable, exceptional talent is not.

@Daniel Hama Life for most people: Go to primary and secondary school just to get a piece of paper that piece of paper with a score attached to it will determined which university you go to just to get another piece of paper. Get debt so you can get another piece of paper. Slave away 40 years of your life away to your employer just to realised that your company will abandoned you by not giving you your pension and insurance. @Dean Aly The only way for an average person to make any return on their investment is buying a house and using high inflation and using the resulting increase in equity in a sell off. These increasing housing prices through inflation is destroying the entire world because the wealth is not real.
As the housing prices increase, so do the rents. Wages cannot keep pace with this kind of greedy inflation and the result is the middle class becoming poorer.
The banks and our govt came up with a plan that enriches themselves at the expense of everyone else. They steal your birth certificate with your real name and replace it with an all capital letter corporate fiction name that looks the same. Now your required to pay your share of the public debt created by Congress and the central bankers.
It's a giant Ponzi scheme and they all know it.
@Dean Aly

When you go to the bank and ask for a loan to buy a house, a car, establish a business, the first thing they need to know is can you afford to pay back the loan?
Using the fractional reserve system of lending, banks can give you digital money, numbers typed in on a computer terminal, that they actually do not have in reality in their 'safe'. They lend you money that does not exist. It only exists when it becomes a debt that you have to pay back with REAL money which is EARNED by YOUR LABOUR.
Fake money becomes real money at the precise moment you agree to take on a debt by signing an agreement. An I Owe U. Your agreement to pay back the loan of fake money is backed up by a legal system devised by crooked lawyers. You know the type, the ones that Jesus called 'snakes'.
By signing an agreement to pay for fake money you are in fact handing over the value of your life and labour to CROOKS.

"By signing an agreement to pay for fake money you are in fact handing over the value of your life and labor to CROOKS." true, but you're handing that away for the money that you want/need. Banks don't force you to make the devil's deal, but you can afford to spend money you don't have on your promise to give it back slowly over time at an interest. I really don't see the problem. As long as banks give credits in the controlled environment you describe, everything is good. The problem appears when banks give money away to people who will never pay back, then the problem arrives. When the contract is broken from the start, when you won't give away the value of your life and labor for the money that you're receiving. That was the 2008 crisis, and that'll be the next and the next and the next crisis.

?@Baby Tho. The way a bank works is that when you hold your savings in the bank, the bank assumes that enough people will keep enough of their savings in the bank so that the bank can lend off that money to people who seek a loan to buy a house or start a business, but require those people to pay interest on the loan. This financial leverage actually adds a lot of value to society. Otherwise everyone would have to pay for their house, car, or anything that you need to open a business in cash, which is not possible for most. Without these banks, house prices would be even higher than they are today. Only the rich would be able to buy a car, because only they would have the money to pay for it in cash and the market for new cars would be way smaller because of it, so good luck getting your hands on one second hand. This decreased demand would make cars more expensive too. And to add to that; the companies that build these cars would need to pay for their factories in cash too. I'm left-leaning too, but all these comments are based on a total disregard for basic economics.
?@Baby Tho.

?@Baby Tho.

living like that scares me. It feels like the only way to be free and safe is by having a lot of money otherwise you're always a slave to someone. Like if you get cancer tomorrow or a car accident or something= homeless

It is funny how these people trying to stop the banks from making money are asking for the exact opposite of what they should be asking for. A bank creates money each time it deems a customer worth of credit. THIS IS TOTALY FINE. If the bank makes a mistake and the customer cannot pay, the bank will lose their own money because the bank still owes the money to the central bank. The problem comes when the central bank lends even more money to a failing bank just because they are friends or family. Then banks can not loose. The problem is not in the fiat system. The problem is in the opaque central banks that take decisions in secret and lend money to their friends without any accountability. Imagine you are a family member of a central bank controller. You give a loan or make an investment: if it works you make money legally. If it fails you ask the central bank for more money until you win. All legal. Losses are transformed into inflation and paid by all, gains are all yours.

The gap between the poor and rich is ever widening. It's harder for the poor afford things, especially necessities like housing. The poor might have more money compared to previous times, but that is only due to inflation, that money isn't worth as much as it used to be anymore, so effectively, the poor are becoming poorer. The reason they don't have it worse but actually better in many ways than people in the past is thanks to the technolocial advancement. If it weren't for that, the poor would live like shit.
