The more that we learn of Donald Trump’s story, the stranger — and yet more predictable — it gets. But here’s the thing. Trump should not be understood as some kind of aberration or anomaly. Rather, he is the culmination of the three forces which have destroyed America from within, left it a smoking ruin of a society: patriarchy, racism, and capital.

I want you to understand these toxic dynamics with crystal clarity. Being a white man was necessary for Trump to be chosen for the wealth — and the second chance — that the Apprentice gave him. In other words, Trump was the beneficiary of a structurally racist and misogynist society and culture.

Were there no women suitable for this job? No minorities? How about a titan of industry from, say, India — that was a real billionaire? Do you see how all this is evidence of structural racism and misogyny in American culture — and what it was to fuel?

Is it any surprise then that racism and misogyny are the precise systems and ideologies he later defended when he became President?

What is the lesson? The thing that Americans should learn?

So there he was, earning a cool half billion, maybe just for being a white man in the right place at the right time. And Americans got the impression that this man was really a kind of commercial genius, who was worth far more than he was, and had great business acumen.

But we now know all that was a fiction. Trump was just playing the character of Donald Trump. In reality, he was none of those things. Not a billionaire, nor a commercial genius, nor a titan of business.

Do you see this next lix? Again, I want you to see it with crystal clarity. Without the Apprentice, without the character of Trump the business genius billionaire, the hard-charging rebel, the leader with perfect instincts, he may have just been another random weird rich guy from New York to most Americans. Because he got this chance, though, he was able to construct a persona that propelled him into political power.

The nation felt disconnected from elites, who seemed not to care about or understand the plight of the average person at all. The average person was right, and elites were wrong. America really was becoming a poor country — and the people who were about to become Trump’s base were its vanguard of new poverty: people who expected upwardly mobile middle class lives, but couldn’t live them, instead finding themselves in debt, living worse lives than their grandparents. That is what a stagnating economy is.

Trump found himself in an improbable place — and pundits couldn’t believe it. He began to lead a mass movement. People flocked to his rallies. They wept for him with a kind of rapt fervour. Nobody much could really understand it. What had happened was that the fictional Trump, the billionaire, the genius, had become a symbol of salvation to a downwardly mobile middle class.

And now Trump did something. He played the demagogue’s trick. He used his newfound credibility as a political figure — remember, he was now seen as a billionaire genius who could solve the average American’s woeful economic problems — to blame it all on already hated minorities.

Why was the “real” American — the white person hoping to climb up from the working class into the middle, from the middle into the upper middle — instead falling downwards, into an abyss of despair, like the great economist Angus Deaton noted? Why, it was the fault of Mexicans. Latinos. Jews. Muslims. Gays. Feminists. Liberated women. Liberals in general. Take them on — cleanse society of them — and we can Make America Great Again.

Again, that’s not some kind of baseless accusation. It is an obxtive fact. Here are just a few of the things Trump said and did on the campaign trail.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. … They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” (Campaign launch speech, New York City, June 16, 2015)

“I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City, N.J., where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down. Thousands of people were cheering.” (Referring to Muslims celebrating on 9/11 at a rally in Birmingham, Alabama, Nov. 21, 2015)

‘Trump released an ad featuring the faces of powerful Jewish people with a voiceover about them being part of a “global power structure” that has “robbed our working class” and “stripped our country of its wealth.”’ (Vanity Fair, 2017)

“If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband, what makes her think she can satisfy America?” (April 16, 2015)

Trump’s story was the one that fascists and authoritarians tell — because by now, Trump was playing a central role in a fascist authoritarian collapse. Those go like this. A society falls into poverty. A demagogue emerges, who blames it all on hated minorities. The masses turn against those minorities. And terrible things happen. In Weimar Germany and Rwanda, genocide.

If you understood all this — if you read the tea leaves, and saw it coming, understanding that a nation with an imploding middle class, sharply declining living standards, rising despair and suicide was about to have a fascist implosion — then the question was this? Who was going to be its demagogue?
The answer, it turned out, was Donald Trump.

But that should not have been a surprise, because Trump rose to power and riches thanks to systems of structural racism and misogyny in the first place. They sexted, naturally, someone who didn’t hold opposed beliefs. For example, someone who’d say: “Thanks, but maybe you should pick a woman, or a minority.” It was Trump who was sexted to play the fictional character of the genius billionaire.

And Americans were about to turn to that fictional persona en masse to save them from living in despair, poverty, and powerlessness. Yet nor was it a surprise that a figure who was sexted and chosen by systems of structural racism and misogyny and patriarchy then made an authoritarian-fascist turn: blaming minorities, women, vulnerable groups in society, for its ills and woes. A figure who was chosen to play the character of fake billionaire because he was a white dude, in order to pander to racism and misogyny, was then hardly likely to turn around and be some kind of thoughtful and just and forward-thinking political leader.
That’s a complex train of thought. Do you see it? Can you hold it?

What I see is this, and I think that America needs to come to an understanding of it. Trump is not an aberration or an anomaly. He is the culmination of a toxic culture and society. A society in which structural racism, misogyny, patriarchy, and inequality privilege a tiny few. Men like Donald Trump — white men, who have gone to the right schools, where they appear to have learned nothing but how to hate.

The result of that, though, for America, has been ruinous. It has been unable to progress as a society because all the money and power rest in the hands of a tiny, tiny group of ultra conservative white men, like Trump. That is why the average American doesn’t have functioning healthcare, affordable education, retirement, a decent income — things the rest of the rich world enjoys as basic rights.

This club, this stratum of society, plays a game, and plays it well. They create fictional characters to sell Americans on their own demise. There was Reagan, the cowboy — who sold Americans Reaganomics, and while Canadians and Europeans were building the world’s best healthcare and educational systems, Americans were tricked into underinvesting massively in themselves. Then there was George W Bush, the fighter pilot, who sold Americans on endless war, while they began to die in massive debt. And then there was Donald Trump, the billionaire, the business genius — who sold Americans fascist authoritarian collapse.

The question is if, in about 30 days, they’ve wised up, .We don’t want to buy what you’re selling anymore — because you were always a fiction to begin with.
