Rahul Mehta,
I am brown, Indian with a little bit of accent. One time I was tired at the end of the day and my 1 year old wont stop being cranky and there was huge line at the Walmart checkout with just one checkout line open.I just politely asked the cashier why doesn’t her manager open more lines and she called the manager who then called he security and I was asked to get out without buying anything.

Another time at Navy Pier, Chicago. There were some school children - probably some private school camp because everyone was in uniform and a 7–8 year old little girl called me brown dog at my face. I was so embarrassed. This is like 15 years back when I was relatively new to this country. I couldn’t believe what I heard. I couldn’t do anything because I didn’t know what I’d be accused for if I said anything to a child.

Another time in Bryn Mawr, about 5–6 years back I was getting out of my apartment complex and I opened the door to an elderly lady she just snubbed me saying - get out of here I hate Indians. Go back to the 3rd world where you came from. She didn’t give me a chance to explain to her what kind of third world I came from and what I am bringing to this country.

Last weekend in Hyannis- a middle aged guy asked me and my wife where we are from - I said Philly, then he asked no where are you originally from - I said India. Then he goes “Indian people I have met never tell me in the first shot that they are from India”. I smiled and got on with my business. Well, both my wife and I are American citizens - we try to get amalgamated into American society but this society doesn’t accept us completely…

Not only does racism still exist in the US, but slavery still exists.
Now, let’s back track a little bit.
In middle school, you were probably taught one thing, and one thing only—that the Civil War, Emancipation Proclamation, and Juneteenth marked the end of slavery in the United States. But what if I tell you that that’s not completely the case? We’re taught that, in 1865, slavery was completely abolished in every state in the country.

Four years later, the 13th Amendment was passed by legislation, and Section 1 states this:“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”Keep in mind the “except as a punishment for a crime” portion. Slavery is defined as labor done with no profit in return, which is still done in the prison industrial complex.

The prison industrial complex is where the government uses prisoners and over incarceration to benefit their economic and social problems. The more prisoners there are, the more free labor will be done and the more money and benefits will be made for the government—so, as a result, the US prison population is on an extreme increase.

However, did you know that 1 in 3 black men, on average, go to jail in their lifetime (compared to 1 in 17 white men)? And, did you know that 97% of prisoners have never gone on trial? And African Americans who have been convicted of murder are approximately seven times more likely to be innocent than white Americans.
As a result of all of this, we can see that black Americans are often wrongfully incarcerated for crimes that they didn’t commit.

I understand that the South may be poorer and I would completely understand why my father wouldn't want to surrounded by poor people. But he made it about black people. They are plenty of poor white people down South as well. Here's my second example. This just happened yesterday and today.

My parents were selling my Buick that transmission had gone to shits. I was done with that car and my father was tired of putting money into it.The night that the buyers were coming over to the house, my mother expressed concern that they were coming over so late and they may be black. I did not let that go easily. “Why does it matter if they're black?” I say. She didn't have a good enough answer.Make the long story short, my parents got scammed by two black people from the Bronx. One didn't even have their licence and I don't know if this is entirely correct. They gave my parents 600 dollars in counterfeit money. All with the same serial number. They had the police over in the morning.

My mother was making a big deal out of the fact they were black. And my father got home from work later that day and said “Now you know why I don't like black people,” he said. “Got scammed by a n*****”.Their crime was undeniable. I even said I hope the car crashes on them . But my parents had to make it about the fact they were black. If they were white, they wouldn't.

I didn't want to believe it before, but it's undeniable now. Both my parents, who grew up in the 60s in mostly white neighborhoods, are racists.I will never ever bring any of my black or nonwhite friends around them. Even though I'm sure they would be completely cordial, I'm afraid they would make some sly, racist comment afterwards.

I am not an expert on this subject, but I will share with you my feelings on the matter. Racism has never not been a part of American society. For many years, it was extremely unpopular to use racist terms and insults. Doing so would expose you criticism immediately - and from nearly everyone. But that doesn’t mean that people abandoned their racist inclinations. They merely didn’t express them openly. The election of our current president seems to have given some people a signal that racism is natural and OK and so they are more openly expressing things that they already feel.

I’d like to offer an alternative response. I would say, “yes, there is racism in America.” BUT it goes both ways. I believe that white people can experience racism from non-whites and it’s happening increasingly here. Here’s a few particularly extreme examples from my experiences growing up in Center City Philadelphia of racism, yes RACISM, against whites…Okay, so, when my parents divorced, my mother moved to a majority black inner city neighborhood and I lived there for much of my upbringing and went to a majority black school.

Here’s a few of experiences I had while living there…When I was 10 years old, I snuck out of the house and went for a brief walk in the neighborhood( my mom rarely let me out). I was outside for all of about 5–10 minutes and an adult 20/30-something black guy comes up to me and says, “Hey, you got any money? Give me some money.” He proceeded to shove his hands into all of my pockets, including my back pockets, and then walked away after finding nothing of value. It was a terrifying experience I will never forget.

When I was 13, a friend(another white boy) and I were walking through the neighborhood and suddenly a group of 7–8 older black teenagers chased us down. Fortunately, we ran into a convenience store for cover where the owner locked the door. But, unfortunately, my friend got hit in the face while running into the store and had a mild concussion.A few years after this, my mother was going for a jog in the morning and a group of black kids on bicycles were riding by playing something called the “knockout game.” One of the kids sucker punched my mother who fell to the ground and came home with a giant welt on her face.

There were many other instances of insane behavior that I witnessed or experienced living down there but these were the worst and most memorable. I can’t help but notice that most of the complaints of white people’s racism involved negative things that people thought or said to or about you. My instances involved ACTUAL THREATS to the physical safety and well-being of myself and loved ones.If you or anyone else thinks that white people are uniquely evil in regards to racism, you are all out of your goddamn minds. I am so sick of the lie. If you spend enough time living in a black neighborhood or in a majority black city school, you know what a load of crap this whole spiel about evil white people is.

Majority white societies are, for the most part, the most open and tolerant places in the world. Very few other parts of the world are as open to immigrants or as open to self-critique and self-correction as white societies. Are there assholes amongst whites? Are their people who say or thing bad things about others? Absolutely. But that’s true of literally every other group of people on Planet Earth. Look at the tribalism, colorism, genocides, wars, etc. that exist in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, etc. This idea that whites are uniquely evil or hateful of outsiders is not only wrong but, in my opinion, it’s a complete inversion of reality as I’ve experienced it.
