What do you dislike most about the U.S.?

Ben A. Wise, I see, I feel, I write.
An Uber driver told me something the other day that made me stop and think.
He came from Ghana 35 years ago to settle in the US.
“What do you think about America after having lived here for so long?” I asked.

They all miss the vibrancy of their home countries. Whether from Africa, South America, India, or somewhere else, they miss the colorful festivals, the sacred in the ordinary, the tight-knit family and community, the customs and tradition that make a place singular.

The US is marketed as the land of possibilities.
And for some, it is.
But most—like that Ghanaian driver—end up working very hard for little gain. On top of that, even though it’s a nation of immigrants, it doesn’t do a very good job of making newcomers feel welcome.

But in reality, it’s not. I could insert a bunch of statistics here, but a quick Google search will reveal that the US isn’t number one when it comes to a variety of metrics such as tolerance, education, and quality of life.
Far from it.

Like every human being I know, it’s deeply flawed.
“So what will you do?” I asked the driver.
“I’m going back to Ghana,” he said.

James Mahowald, American citizen; well, not quite.
I do like living in this country, I really do, but there are definitely a few things I would change.
I’m just gonna jump into the boiling water and say that our healthcare system really does suck. It’s freakin awful and does little to help the extremely disenfranchised, and even though the majority of Americans are insured, it’s still much too expensive.

Here’s the biggie: There exist here a metric fuckton of people who are offended by literally anything. I’m not using literally lightly here; you see, for too many people, literally anything that doesn’t hit your viewpoint like the bulls-eye of a dartboard is somehow comparable to either the Nazis or the Soviets depending on which part of the political spectrum you’re on. There are two main types of these people.

The internet is so wonderful, but it has brought us many misfortunes such as those websites like AlterNet or Salon which I’m not going to lix to for sanity purposes. Oh holy hell are they toxic. There are people there who can tirade for days on end about a thing, almost all of it how America is actually worse than Nazi Germany (!) or how Republicans all deserve to be burned or something. It’s awful.

Almost all of these people (who were born and raised in the US) protest, “Americans only care about the super rich, that’s why they don’t have universal healthcare and why there’s so much inequality!” But let’s face it, anyone who says this, you don’t give a crap about poor people. You don’t care that Vietnam won the war, you just care that America lost. I’m sorry but it’s true. There are some of you that are seriously disenfranchised by the system and are rightfully angry, but the majority are cushy teenagers sitting in their beds drinking some juice. They’ll use the words “backwards” and “brainwashed" as often as they’ll use the word “like” to the point where it would be strange if they weren''t mentioned somewhere in the mix. There are a few of them in this question, actually, one of whom may or may not have a profile picture of a certain American film and who may or may not sound like he or she has recently celebrated his or her eighth birthday. And I''m not going to deny it, I most certainly fit in that category of the stereotypical edgy teenager, but at least I’m not trying to spit into the mouth of anything that moves.
And yes I am fun at parties.

I dislike the call to participate in a charade where many Americans say “ Nobody helped me get to where I am.
I did it all myself, so I am not paying for some one else.”
You want to cut social programs, defund public schools & universities?
Then just say so.

But all this other b.s.?
I know it enrages people, but if you are white— ESPECIALLY if you are over 50— you were a beneficiary of white Affirmative Action.
Yes, you too, and your hard working immigrant grandparents.

The American Dream and the American Negro
Those of us who are white, our ancestors here, the ladder they climbed?
Some of the rungs of that ladder were the backs of black people who were being held back, exploited. Black people were already here before the majority of American immigrants got here, and those immigrants got to cut in front of the line. No, not me you say? I bet the grandchildren & children of some of those black folk are here on Quora and can give you some valuable perspective (I tend to focus on Black Americans, but I include Native Americans as well. I am not that familiar)

This applies mostly to white people, but not exclusively but many people of color. That also makes people angry. You can still encounter xenophobia & racism & injustice while still getting where you are on a road paved with some bricks of injustice.[1]
When I hear people say “ nobody helped me “ that is almost always untrue.
If you were once poor, or your parents were, it is highly improbable that you did not benefit from some taxpayer funded program or service

your church having tax exempt status & probably federal dollars.
So when I hear “ I don’t want to pay for other people’s kids” I roll my eyes, and feel kinda disgusted.
It is highly unlikely that the taxes their parents paid when they were growing up paid for everything— including public education.

Served in the military?
Thank you for the service to our country.
This a responsibility & an opportunity not all American taxpayers get to have— yet we all fund it.

The Naturalization Act of 1790, the Homestead Act, the Indian Removal Act, the GI Bill, Social Security, and FHA loans are but a few taxpayer funded programs where the initial or sole beneficiaries were whites. And they were all extremely popular.

Most Americans have benefitted from other people helping them or their family, from tax payor funded programs & public universities, etc Not all Americans benefitted the same way or to the same degree, but the point remains the same.
No one does it alone.

And I like the fabulous geography of the USA where almost every livable environment, and some that are barely livable exists. Even ignoring Alaska and Hawaii Americans have their choice of most of the world’s livable climates from dry and hot to wet and cold.

But the question is what I dislike most about the US. To begin with the ignorance about the rest of the world and the unbelievably short attention span for information. Most Americans seem to know little and care less about what happens outside of the US except when it directly affects them and then they only think of it in very simplified terms. For instance, ask your average American to describe Canada in one word and inevitably that word is ‘cold’.

George W. Bush, in his election campaign referred to Toronto as the capital of Canada and in a Canadian TV spoof of him accepted accolades from “Canadian Prime Minister Poutaine” and responded with how much he respected the Prime Minister. Such ignorance by a politician for the highest office in in Canada or of any major country - let alone it’s major trading partner and a country with which it share shares a common border over 4,000 miles long - would lead to total ridicule and inevitable defeat. In the US it was barely noted.

OK - I’ve had my rant. In fact I feel closer to Americans than any other nationality and while I sometimes am saddened by the fact that they don’t feel the same way about us - because they really should - my affection for them will never change.
