That’s called trade. Trade can be and increasingly is immaterial. Innovations will diminish the importance of gas and oil not to mention coal. Russians just think they can pump infinite riches out of Mother Russia as if she were a milch cow – and throw garbage into her endless bosom just as liberally.

I wish more trade was in electrons, and less in stuff shipped around the world in heavy containers. With specific reference to the west living from clipping each others hair and getting all of their goods from China. I’d prefer bureaucracy was farmed out overseas and manufacturing kept in house.

Lol. Yes, everyone`s set. It is quite peculiar that the service sector`s value added share of GDP in the whole world is 65 percent. Even in Russia it`s 54, 60 in Estonia.
So you could say most people on the planet are living off by clipping each other`s hair, Russia included.
But they need petroleum to get to work, to make plastic for the scissor handles, and for vaseline in hair styling products, coal to stay warm, copper for electricity and rare earth minerals for the batteries to the hair cutting machine, This guy had a really hard time understanding that, and said that we can just use data to find oil and minerals.

In the future, oil will go the way which coal has gone already: become redundant.
We are on the verge of abandoning combustion engine cars altogether, and combustion engines in general are so last season. They are sunset technology. Every year sees cheaper and more efficient solar panels, wind turbines, batteries and other means of creating electricity than burning things up and boiling water. The Second Industrial Revolution (1870 to 1940) made oil meaningful; the Fourth Industrial Revolution (2010 to near future) will make it irrelevant.
This is not to say oil wasn’t important for the world of today, but within 20 years its production will diminish, prices plummet and oil industry in general be run down.
Russians, Venezuelans and Arabs are better to learn to drink their oil.

I’m with you on most of what you wrote but bro a primarily service based economy is what all industrial nations eventually transition into; it’s often the mark of a developed country.
Natural resources are finite. Estonia like you say has an enormous tech sector (considering it’s size) and professional services relating to that is hardly just cutting each other’s hair and buying groceries from each other.
Most of their investment has been from Finland and Sweden as far as I know, which along with the know-how from those two countries is what has led to Estonia becoming far more developed than the other Baltic States (Latvia & Lithuania).

There are Russians in Estonia and they are poor but they are not as poor as Russians in Russia. Estonia has suffered for centuries from Russian aggression. Russians can not understand how Estonia can flourish because they have accepted that corruption is the usually form of business and do not understand that it causes Russian poverty where as Estonia’s acceptance of rule of law allows prosperity. Since the Russians accept corruption and brutality as their lot in life they have to denegrate nations which are far better places to live. This also drives their desire to reincorporate these smaller nations into their empire, If Russians have short miserable lives why shouldn’t the Estonians too, is closer to Russian thinking than they don’t have any resources. Russians don’t mind misery as long as their naibours are mostly miserable too and that is at the national and personal level.

The Estonian rationale is completely ignored in news stories—not only in Russia, but in most of Western reporting as well—on the alleged discrimination of Russians or Russian-speakers in granting citizenship. Estonians are adamant about the legal continuity of the Republic of Estonia. So why people have been treated differently has nothing to do with their language or ethnicity but with citizenship of the pre-war Republic of Estonia: either you are a citizen or a descendant of a citizen or then you are not. Not very many complaints about discrimination have been heard from Estonia’s Old Believer Russian community, the traditional Russian minority there.
But those bad Estonians just won’t give people Passports!! Imagine the affront! Moscow was more than generous giving Estonians brand new Passports, right…?
(Of course some people don’t even want citizenship, because they don’t feel like learning Estonian at older age or simply don’t care about Tallinn politics. They can vote in local elections being residents, and crossing the border to Russia with the grey Estonian Alien’s Passport is a piece of cake, so they actually prefer this to being citizens.)

(I’m glad we agree. But just to make sure:)
They do have, any of them, regardless of history and ethnic or national background, the opportunity to get citizenship. Even if they don’t, they have rights, such as the right to vote in local elections as residents. (As I already said, many ethnic Russians of the north-east prefer the “gray passport” because it makes things easier for them with Russia. This is completely ignored in Russia’s media propaganda.)
Incidentally, as Russia(n propaganda) seems to be so triggered about the rights of Russians in Estonia, how is it with non-citizen residents in Russia? Do they have the same rights? I’m rather implying that maybe local elections would be of some consequence in Russia, but I may be wrong.
What I was talking about above was those who became citizens of the newly independent republic “automatically”. Actually, they did not become citizens; they (or their ancestors) were citizens of the Republic of Estonia, so they were citizens when the independence of the country was restored.

As an Estonian in my mid-20s, with keen interests in geopolitics and history, and having also done my compulsory military service, I could have a very long argument about that propaganda, and about what has happened and what is happening, but instead I’ll just say it’s sad that the situation is like it is.
To put it in the simplest of terms: fundamentally, we are simply afraid of you, and considering our tragic history, I don’t really think Russia or anybody else can blame us for being a bit paranoid, whether there is reason to be afraid or not. And namely we are afraid of your regime, not your people, with whom we get along fine, there’s tourism both ways, cultural lixs, etc.
We just want to never be occupied again, and all the decisions we take ultimately serve that purpose. If those fifty years of communism would not have happened, we would basically be a small version of Finland right now. All we want is to stay free and to catch up with our friends in Europe as fast as we can.

They have a really good university and people come from all over the world to live/work in Estonia. Tourism is also a thing in Estonia. I bet they also invest in AI technologies, IT etc. so it is less about products than solutions. Being close to the sea gives you many opportunities (they have cruise ships, fishing etc.). And we have to remember the past, when people lived in small tribes. Small groups are more easy manageable and more productive. I think maybe it is the same with smaller countries. You will always find electricity and communications wherever you go, unlike in Russia. Of course it has some negative side to it, like you don''''t have so many beautiful places untouched by humans, but they still have those. And these days I doubt you have to worry so much about the military strength - most warfare is economic. It would be nonsense to even think about military conflicts.

The author of the first cartoon does not understand what the fence is for and displays false assumptions. Estonia and Latvia are building the fence not to protect from Russia but stopping illegal people traffic. There are quite a lot of Vietnamese and other Asian illegal migrants crossing the border.

Estonians hate all things russian as the soviets invaded their country for no reason. Unfortunately not all Russians should be blamed for what communists did

That is not true that Estonians hate all things Russian. At all

Estonia is largely seen in the English language press as a model post-Soviet nation, progressive, sophisticated, technology-oriented, and, importantly, picturesque and an excellent tourist destination. Estonia’s government appears to be very open to creative initiatives to make it more efficient and responsive. All of this is an implied rebuke to the memory of the preceding regime. Estonians seem to be demonstrating just how stultifying it must have been to have kept this talented and progressive people down. This is the image, carefully and successfully cultivated. I would guess that many in other former unx republics envy the success of Estonia in branding itself as a modern western nation, worthy of being folded into its economic, cultural and security institutions. The darker narrative of the language conflict and NATO’s presence in close proximity to Estonia’s mammoth neighbor and former “occupier” is also frequently mentioned in the press as an unresolved problem.

All the small countries around Russia would do best by joining Russia : Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania/Moldavia/Armenia/Georgia. Russians are decent people.

Sure, last time they did, 103% vote to join, they got a solid help in solving their overpopulation problem. About 10% of people.
