THE GHOST CITY OF FENGDU, CHINA

“Are you an honest person? Do you think you will go to hell?” These we the questions we were faced with as we approached the first steps of the Ghost City of Fengdu during our cruise down the Three Gorges of China.

Our guide, was a petite chipper local resident full of knowledge and ready to share it over her small loudspeaker that was slung over her shoulder.

After a short ride on an electric golf cart from the ship to the entrance we were dropped at the gate of what is supposed to be one of the most sacred sites in this province of China.

OK, LET THE TESTING BEGIN!

We made through the first construction zone and were faced with the first test.

TEST #1 THE JUDGEMENT BRIDGE

Our first test was to walk across the “Judgment Bridge.” You must cross the bridge while thinking of someone you want to spend eternity with, in nine steps, without slipping or falling on the bridge itself.

If you slipped and fell you would be judged as a bad person and spend your eternity in the rivers of hell. Obviously you would lose your credibility as an honest person.

But we all made it across unscathed and were deemed worthy to continue to the next test.

Looking in front of me I could see a crowd of people gathered around what looked like an ancient game of spin the top. Further investigation revealed it was not that at all but our test number two.

TEST #2 – FOR MEN

In this test you had to prove you were a strong man and good husband material. (What this had to do with getting into the temple I still have no idea).

We were told that the stone weight 200kg and we had to roll it around and balance it on top of the pedestal. Who wants to try? Well instead of having my manhood put into question in front of hundreds of people I graciously volunteered my fellow Intrepid Traveler Randeep to give it a try. He stepped in and was able to roll it twice, but there was no way it was going onto the top of that pedestal.

We had failed test number two.

We were told to step aside and see how it was done. A small stocky Chinese farmer emerged from behind the crowd and rubbed his hands together.

Then in one quick motion the 200kg rock was balancing on top of the pedestal. Impressive. Apparently he is the only one in the village that can do this and it took him 2 years of practice.

That made Randeep and I feel better.

TEST #3

测试3

What would it be? At the entrance to the final temple we were faced with the challenge of standing on a small rock ball with one foot and counting to three all while looking into the temples entrance. Sounded easy enough to me.

As my fellow companions faced the final test I could see that the criteria for passing this challenge was solely based on how fast you could count to three. Approaching the ball I confidently stepped up, stood on one foot and proceeded to count to three as fast as I possibly could. As everyone praised my extraordinary fast counting skills, I was ushered through the gate and greeted with a splendid 600 yr old statue and the comforting knowledge that I was not going to hell!

THREE GORGES, CHINA’S RAPID DEVELOPMENT ON THE YANGZI RIVER

The Three Gorges is a must do trip when traveling to China. It goes along the Yangzi River where you will witness ancient history meeting rapid high tech development.

I hadn’t really thought of our Three Gorges trip as a proper cruise, but when an older English woman approached me in the lounge to ask if I cruise often, it hit me that this river excursion is part of the cruising society.

It was only 3 days, but yes, it definitely felt like a cruising environment.

Our Intrepid Travel Group of seven seemed oddly out of place on a boat filled with giant bus tours of retirees.

Day one of the Three Gorges Cruise, took us to Chengdu, The City of Ghosts. Buildings were under construction and nothing was authentic or even remotely old.

I was ill during this day, so you are going to have to read more about Fengdu, the City of Ghosts by Dave.

He soldiered on without me and shares his story about the tour here at The Three Gorges Ghost City.

Day two took us to the Little Three Gorges.

This has far more attractive scenery and everyone should make an effort to see them.

The trip to the lesser three gorges moves to a smaller boat with a tributary of the Yangzi River.

While life is tough for those in the middle of the transition, it might be more prosperous for the future generations.

While I can’t understand why a country would flood cities with thousands of years of history and I can’t even imagine the environmental impact, I can understand why China went ahead with the Three Gorges Dam project.

There is a large divide between East and West.

The West had its industrial revolution a century ago and has reaped the rewards for decades. We have lived a life of comfort and prosperity.

And while we would like for them to learn from our mistakes and look into ways of growing without the environmental impact that they are creating, who are we to keep people from having heat and air conditioning and driving cars and having the creature comforts of life?

In the next few years, China will be building 12 more dams and 30 nuclear power plants.

The Three Gorges Dam was expected to supply 10 percent of China’s power when they first started building it in 1994. With the rapid growth of China’s energy consumption, it is now only supplying 3 Percent.

When the other dams are built, it will only give China 1 percent of its energy.

However, the Three Gorges has also opened up an entire shipping lane to the heart of the country.

While it was going to be a large energy source, it is now an avenue for trade and industry.

The world is changing and as much as we would like it to stay the same, it is impossible.

Whether it is good or bad, that remains to be seen.

SHANGHAI ACROBATS OF CHINA – AN AMAZING SPECTACLE

We heard that the Shanghai acrobats of china were some of the finest in the world, but we didn''t want to give up a night walking around this exciting Asian city. I''m glad we ended up going.

We quickly ran down to the river front to take a few photos of the Shanghai skyline and then hopped on the metro to make our way to the Yun Feng theatre.

The Shanghai Acrobats of China show was of the greatest spectacles we have ever seen. From the moment it started we sat in our seats with our jaws dropped.

Acrobats leap from pole to pole

Talented performers with great athletic skil flipped around the stage with non-stop energy for a solid 90 minutes.

The show started off with an astounding display of skill and balance as a troop of young men swung from metal poles. Leaping through the air, they made the audience gasp with their daredevil moves.

They set the bar high right off the top and we wondered how each act was going to top the other.

From foot jugglers to balancing on pipes, body contortionists to riders of trick bicycles, these gymnasts kept throwing new and exciting acts at us.

The most impressive moment came when a young girl performed an arial ballet. Balancing with one arm on a long pole high in the air, she bent her body in all directions displaying not only amazing grace and flexibility, but outstanding strength and balance.

At times, the show was almost uncomfortable to watch as the performers bent their backs in abnormal directions. As I squirmed in my seat, I couldn''t take my eyes off of the fascinating show going right before us.

The show slowed down for a few moments as a beautiful duet began to Celine Dion''s My Heart Will Go On. A couple''s love story unfolded high above the stage swinging in the silks.

It was all at once cheesy and beautiful as the Titanic movie''s pivotal scene where Leonardo DiCaprio yells “I''m King of the World” played on the screens above the stage.

The performers and gymnasts did their job well and put on a magnificent performance for all. With a balanced blend of artistry and elegance with power and muscular strength.

IT WAS AWESOME.

The circled round and round some went up and some went down. I held my breath and prayed that I wouldn''t be in the one and only audience that witnessed a dreadful accident…It never happened.

IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING FINALES I HAVE WITNESSED IN MY LIFE.

they are some of the best in the world and it is a show not to be missed. I am so glad that we took the night to see the show rather than walking aimlessly around the streets of Shanghai.

Besides, it ended early enough that we had the chance to walk back on the shopping street and take in the neon lights of one of the most electrically charged cities on the planet.
