As a Canadian who has lived all over the world, I have seen a great deal of anger and bitterness towards the USA. People claim it bullies weaker countries to gain advantage, starts wars in its own interest, ignores international law, and generally extracts more than it gives from its position as #1. These complaints constitute just the tip of the iceberg.

On the other other hand, in the USA, people often complain that the US gives too much without getting enough in return. It has tolerated unfair trade deals with, and acted as the market of last resort for, too many nations. It has paid a disproportionate amount for Europe''''s defense. It is the policeman of the world that everyone comes running to whenever anything bad happens, and yet takes little in the way of traditional spoils of war for its efforts.

Is one side right and the other wrong? Is there any way to reconcile these seemingly diametrically opposed views?
