Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard has sent 100 boats to the Persian Gulf for naval exercises which could result in them shutting off the Strait of Hormuz, according to US officials.

The Strait of Hormuz is a conduit between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman which provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.
It's one of the world's most important oil choke points, with 20 per cent of oil traded worldwide moving through the waterway.

The military exercise comes after President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of an international nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions on Tehran.

Senior Iranian officials have warned the country would not easily yield to a renewed US campaign to strangle Iran's vital oil exports.

But US officials, speaking anonymously, said Iran's Revolutionary Guards has appeared to prepare more than 100 vessels for exercises.

Hundreds of ground forces could also be involved. They said the drills could begin within the next 48 hours, although the precise timing was unclear.

US officials said the timing of the drills appeared designed to send a message to Washington, which is intensifying its economic and diplomatic pressure on Tehran.

Trump's policies are already putting significant pressure on the Iranian economy, although US intelligence suggests they may ultimately rally Iranians against the United States and strengthen Iran's hardline rulers, officials say.

Iran's currency plumbed new depths this week as Iranians brace for August 7 when Washington is due to reimpose a first lot of economic sanctions.

A number of protests have broken out in Iran since the beginning of the year over high prices, water shortage, power cuts and alleged corruption.

On Tuesday, hundreds of people rallied in cities including Isfahan, Karaj, Shiraz and Ahvaz in protest against high inflation caused in part by the weak rial.

I love Iranian people. I have been there and know first hand that they are extremely hospitable people that LOVE AMERICANS. There government' like ours can be a very different thing like people in the United States and their government is. I would like to indeed see Iran flex some muscle against Trump. Let the Iranians show the world how impotent Trump truly is. They have my blessing.

It's their territory so they can do as they please ,sorry I forget everybody has to as America please according to Americans

Here it comes the idiot has started a massive problem!

Thank you Iran for setting some boundaries with Donald Trump. Flex some muscle.

Why stop now. The world has been stealing Iranian oil almost forever. Britain got great on it while Iranians starved.

China and Russia are taking advantage of Trump's lack of intelligence. So it this also worth of a Noble Prize?

They have very fast attack boats that can easy take out a warship at a very lost cost just ramming them at high speed, very hard to detect and destroy!

So the US have issues with a country conducting naval exercises in THEIR OWN backyard. Astonishing but not surprising. After all, the US bombed Tehran to overthrow their democratically elected PM in 1953 because he wanted to share Iran's oil wealth with his fellow ordinary Iranian countrymen.

Higher gas prices = good midterms for dems!
